Inter Miami Set to Honor Lionel Messi With Legendary Stadium Tribute

Lionel Messi's monumental influence on Inter Miami will be honored through the naming of a stand at the club's stunning new venue—Nu Stadium at Miami Freedom Park, set to open its doors following the international break.

The Herons, the current MLS Cup holders, welcome Austin FC on April 4 for their inaugural home fixture at the 26,700-capacity stadium situated in the heart of Miami.

The development of Nu Stadium, which will succeed the team's temporary Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, has been a lengthy journey, first announced by co-owner Sir David Beckham in 2018.

Every element of the venue boasts premium quality, from the longest bar in MLS at the Nu Club—a 770-person upscale hospitality lounge featuring a glass tunnel view of players making their way from the locker room to the pitch—to the very blades of Bermuda grass on the field, which are cultivated locally in Loxahatchee, Fla.

Yet, Nu Stadium's most notable distinction may be the real-time tribute it pays to Inter Miami's marquee attraction: Messi.

The club announced that their captain will be celebrated for his achievements and contribution to the club at Nu Stadium through the Leo Messi Stand—making the Argentine icon the first active player at his home ground to have a stand named after him.

Since his arrival in South Florida in 2023, Messi has transformed not only Inter Miami but the entire MLS landscape.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient, across just three full seasons, has guided the club to its first Leagues Cup title (2023), Supporters' Shield (2024) and MLS Cup (2025), while personally claiming consecutive MLS MVP honors in 2024 and 2025.

On a broader scale, Messi has drawn record-setting crowds to MLS fixtures, dramatically boosting the league's profile across the U.S. Notably, Inter Miami recently packed M&T Stadium, home of the NFL's Baltimore Ravens, with more than 72,000 supporters for their clash against DC United earlier this month—a phenomenon widely referred to as "the Messi effect."

Inter Miami also drew an attendance of 75,673 when they took on LAFC last month at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Messi has further enticed several of the world's elite players to America's top division, which has only accelerated the league's expansion and visibility.

Fellow legends Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba followed Messi to Inter Miami in 2023, with Rodrigo De Paul joining the roster last July. Son Heung-Min signed with LAFC from Tottenham Hotspur last August, crediting Messi for shifting his perspective on the league. Bayern Munich stalwart Thomas Müller also made his MLS move last August, making his debut with the Vancouver Whitecaps, last season's MLS Cup finalists.
