Andoni Iraola stopped short of dismissing growing transfer speculation linking Mexican starlet Gilberto Mora with a switch to Liverpool.
The 18-year-old has made a name for himself with Tijuana in his home country and raised his profile further with four outings for co-hosts Mexico at last summer's World Cup. Unsurprisingly, the attacking midfielder's next destination has become a hot topic of conversation.
Mora has been heavily touted for a move to Spain, where Barcelona or Real Madrid would be the most likely destinations, though Premier League heavyweights have also shown considerable interest. Liverpool are among the English sides said to be monitoring the teenager.
Speaking with TNT Sports Mexico following Liverpool's 4–3 victory against Villarreal on Tuesday, Iraola was pressed on his club's pursuit of Mora. The Spanish manager declined to close the door on a potential transfer.
"Let's see, not only because of what he's doing," Iraola responded. "There are times when you ask me about players, but I can't talk about players who aren't ours, right? In the end, there's respect.
"And there has to be respect between clubs and well, if you'll allow me, I have my opinion, obviously, but I prefer not to comment, not about players who aren't from Liverpool."
The Reds have reportedly tabled an offer of up to $50 million for the youngster, according to TUDN's David Faitelson, fueling optimism among Liverpool fans that a deal for one of global football's most sought-after talents could be within reach.
While Iraola fell short of confirming interest in Mora, his guarded answer will give supporters plenty of reason to remain hopeful.
Why Do Liverpool Want to Sign Precocious Mora?

"I think Gilberto is very talented and has a bright future ahead of him. He just needs the right guidance. I believe he could fit in with any team." Those were the glowing words of newly appointed Mexico boss Rafael Márquez, who has a closer insight into Mora than most.
The 5'6" prodigy has attracted an impressive array of admirers for good reason. His slight build might put off certain clubs, but it's his low center of gravity that enables him to change direction in an instant, before dismantling opposition backlines with his technical brilliance and exceptional passing range.
Mora is a reliable goal threat as well. Five strikes in seven Liga MX appearances from the No. 10 role this season speak to that—though four came from the spot—while he has accumulated 15 in total across 62 appearances for Tijuana.
Versatility is another key asset, with Mora equally capable of operating from the left flank or through the middle.
Liverpool may not be crying out for reinforcements in attacking midfield or on the left wing, but a potentially once-in-a-generation talent like Mora could well make them reconsider.
