Barcelona's Champions League Nightmare Deepens as Crushing Injury Crisis Strikes

Barcelona suffered their first loss of the campaign against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, and to make matters worse, Dani Olmo has been ruled out for approximately a month after scans confirmed an adductor muscle injury.

The Spanish giants were beaten 4–2 by the defending champions in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, bringing an impressive 11-game winning streak to start the 2026–27 season to an abrupt end.

Olmo was named in the starting lineup for Barcelona at the Parc des Princes and appeared in fine form before hobbling off the field in the 27th minute with the match still goalless.

Injuries have followed Olmo throughout his career, even before his move to Catalonia in the summer of 2024. After a largely injury-free 2026, the creative midfielder now faces another extended stint on the treatment table.

When Will Dani Olmo Return From Adductor Injury?

While contesting a loose ball, Olmo sustained the injury after a collision with Vitinha, landing awkwardly following a heavy blow to the adductor area. The 28-year-old remained on the turf for an extended period before carefully making his way off the pitch, with Fermín López coming on as his replacement.

Further examinations conducted in the hours that followed revealed the full extent of the damage, with Barcelona issuing an official statement confirming Olmo would be unavailable until at least the November international break.

"Medical tests have confirmed that Dani Olmo has sustained an injury to his left adductor muscle as a result of a collision with an opposing player during the match against Paris Saint-Germain," the statement read. "The player is expected to be sidelined for approximately one month."

The attacking midfielder will sit out a hectic stretch of the season, with high-profile La Liga and Champions League matches scheduled over the next four weeks. The first game Olmo will be absent for is the opening El Clásico of the season, when Real Madrid travel to the Camp Nou on Sunday—with several other crucial fixtures also on the horizon.

Who Can Replace Dani Olmo For Barcelona?

Fermín López

With Olmo unavailable, López is expected to earn an extended run in the starting eleven as the attacking midfielder in Flick's favored 4-2-3-1 system. The Spaniard has been vying with Olmo for the starting berth at that position over the last two seasons, with Flick typically going with whoever is in better form.

However, given how vulnerable Barcelona appeared defensively against PSG—with their midfield double-pivot struggling to cope with the Parisians on the counter—Flick may be inclined to shift to a more conventional 4-3-3 setup.

Pedri and Rodri have been the most frequently used midfield partnership, but with Frenkie de Jong now back from injury, the German manager could opt for a three-man midfield, particularly against the quality opponents Barcelona will encounter in the weeks ahead.

Should Flick choose to maintain his 4-2-3-1 shape, another possibility would be deploying Lamine Yamal in the No. 10 position. The young star has played in more central areas than ever this season, and Flick may experiment with him in that role during Olmo's absence, potentially allowing Karim Adeyemi or López to feature on the right flank.

Whatever Flick ultimately chooses, Olmo's absence is a notable blow given he had been producing some of his finest performances of the season and had just netted his first goal of the campaign. Barcelona's attacking options will also be put to the test during this congested run of fixtures.

Olmo joins Eric García and Roony Bardghji in the injury room, while Barcelona are hopeful that Jules Koundé can be fit in time for El Clásico after picking up a minor knock that kept him out of the PSG clash.
