Is It Time for Barcelona to Lock Down Lewandowski with a New Deal?

With only seven matches remaining before Robert Lewandowski's Barcelona deal runs out at the end of the campaign, the iconic forward's next move remains highly uncertain.

Lewandowski arrived at Barcelona in the summer of 2022 following eight remarkable seasons at Bayern Munich, where he established himself as the club's second all-time top scorer. He became the headline signing of the post-Lionel Messi era at Camp Nou, and the Polish star has accumulated over 100 goals across his four years in Catalonia.

However, with his deal winding down and age appearing to take its toll, questions loom over Lewandowski's future beyond 2025–26. In recent days, the veteran forward addressed his uncertain situation.

"I need some time to think and it's clear for both sides," Lewandowski told Esport3. "Every day the press has something new but that's not important to us. What's important is what we want to achieve together this season.

"I don't want to talk about offers or about my future. La Liga title, the remaining games and [scoring] goals are more important. We still have some time, the club already knows what I think."

Lewandowski Reportedly 'Not Happy' With Barcelona Renewal Offer

The prospect of extending Lewandowski's contract has gained traction in recent weeks. Spanish media outlets have even reported that Barcelona have already put forward a new proposal to Lewandowski's representative Pini Zahavi, though Fabrizio Romano indicates the Polish international is "not too happy" with what's been offered.

Barcelona reportedly tabled a one-year extension for Lewandowski but with a substantially reduced wage, which is believed to be the primary source of the veteran striker's dissatisfaction.

Lewandowski currently ranks among the top earners at Barcelona. His annual base salary of over $24 million (€20.8 million) is in fact the highest of any player at the club.

Those terms, however, were agreed when Lewandowski arrived off the back of a 50-goal season in Germany. Four years on, he has managed 17 goals in 2025–26 and is set to turn 38 years old.

What Should Barcelona Do With Lewandowski?

Talks between Barcelona and Lewandowski's representatives are expected to continue as the summer approaches, though the Catalan club must remain focused on their broader objectives.

One thing the 2025–26 season has made evident is that Lewandowski can no longer shoulder the attacking burden a Champions League contender demands. Bringing in a world-class striker is among Barcelona's top priorities heading into the transfer window, and Lewandowski's contract situation should not derail that pursuit.

Securing a top-quality center-back reinforcement is equally pressing—if not more so. For a financially constrained club with such obvious needs, every penny matters.

Retaining Lewandowski in a rotational capacity to help share the workload with a potential new first-choice striker could prove valuable. The prolific goalscorer also plays a vital role as an experienced leader in a dressing room filled with young talent.

But if Lewandowski is unwilling to accept a notable pay reduction—which is entirely his prerogative—then Barcelona simply cannot stretch to meet his demands. Ferran Torres remains contracted for next season and could serve as backup to any new striker brought in.

Barcelona should only renew Lewandowski's deal under terms that don't jeopardize their ability to complete their key summer signings. Agreeing to anything less could leave the club facing the very same dilemma a year from now.
