João Pedro's value to Chelsea is undeniable. The striker netted 23 times across all competitions in his opening year at the club, and when assists are factored in, his total goal contributions rise to 32. In the current 2026–27 campaign, he has already racked up eight goals and assists in just seven appearances.
Chelsea had already suffered a scoreless defeat to Brentford last month while Pedro was sidelined with a knee problem. So when he was unexpectedly left off Xabi Alonso's starting lineup this past Saturday against Tottenham Hotspur, the Blues found themselves struggling once more.
If anything, his absences only highlight just how vital Pedro truly is. It's not that Chelsea lack another reliable scorer—Cole Palmer is the next highest contributor since the beginning of last season with 15 goals across all competitions. The difference is that Pedro is the glue that holds everything together.
That cohesive quality was something Morgan Rogers failed to replicate when leading the line as a No. 9 against Tottenham, a role far removed from his preferred inside forward berth on the left. Danny Welbeck was signed to provide occasional cover, mainly in domestic cup competitions, not to be a regular starter. Emmanuel Emegha has yet to feature due to injury. Nicolas Jackson is in excellent form … but that's at Aston Villa.
Chelsea simply don't operate at their best without Pedro, meaning any extended absence will pose a serious, serious challenge.
"He is a key player. We will miss him," Alonso told reporters on Tuesday, ahead of the Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool. "But we will have to be ready to deal with the injury and to be competitive and to try to win games with the players that we have available."
What Injury Does Joao Pedro Have?

"An injury in his thigh" was how Alonso described Pedro's problem during that same press conference.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion forward missed two matches with a thigh complaint back in April of last season. A hamstring injury also kept him out for nearly two months while still at Brighton during the second half of the 2023–24 season. Pedro also dealt with a calf issue for roughly three weeks during his time at Watford in 2022–23.
These are sporadic muscular setbacks rather than anything particularly alarming at this point. He also hasn't accumulated a significant injury record throughout his career. Transfermarkt puts his total games missed at 28 over seven professional years.
Should these types of problems begin occurring more frequently, they would naturally become a greater cause for concern going forward.
When Will Joao Pedro Return From Injury?

This injury is neither trivial nor particularly severe—it sits somewhere in between.
Alonso's estimate is "a few weeks on the sidelines," though the Spaniard was hesitant to pin down a more precise timeline. "Let's see how many [weeks] … We don't want to predict that. But he will not be ready for the next games."
That wording—"next games"—likely covers at least everything up to the November international break, which kicks off after Chelsea's Premier League fixture against Sunderland on Nov. 8. That means Pedro will be unavailable not only for this week's Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool, but also for the league home game against Manchester United on Halloween.
Chelsea's first fixture after the international break—Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on Nov. 21—is just under four weeks away. Five weeks out takes the team past a trip to Nottingham Forest and up to the home clash with Crystal Palace on Dec. 2. A Premier League meeting with Liverpool falls just under six weeks from now, while the away trip to Manchester City's Etihad Stadium is seven weeks away on Dec. 12.
