Jordan Henderson has announced the mutual termination of his Brentford contract this summer, making him available as a free agent at a time when he has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea.
The 36-year-old midfielder had only signed a two-year deal with the Bees last summer after pushing for a departure from Ajax. A former Sunderland and Liverpool player, Henderson delivered a strong campaign back in England's top flight, appearing in 32 Premier League games as Keith Andrews's side climbed to ninth place, one position and one point ahead of their west London neighbors — and Henderson's potential next club — Chelsea.
"I leave Brentford with a great deal of gratitude for the opportunity the club provided me, and for the support and care shown to me and my family from the very beginning," Henderson wrote in a statement on the club's website when the news emerged on Wednesday.
"Returning to the Premier League was extremely important to me, and Brentford gave me that opportunity. I'll always be grateful for that. I hope I was able to contribute to helping the team through a significant period for the club. We accomplished a great deal together last season, and it's something everyone involved should take pride in.
"Brentford is a truly special football club. It's ambitious, forward-thinking and filled with great people. From the owners and leadership, to the coaching staff, the players and everyone working behind the scenes, it has been an honor to be a part of it.
"Above all, I want to thank the supporters. Their backing never wavered, and the connection they share with the club is plain to see. They care deeply about Brentford and they get behind the team in the right way at every step of the journey."
Henderson Closing in on Shock Chelsea Switch
There was no mention of Chelsea in Henderson's Brentford farewell message — perhaps wisely — but news of his departure means it will only be a matter of time before the midfielder (who is still recovering from a broken arm suffered during the celebrations of England's World Cup victory over Mexico) makes the short journey across west London.
Xabi Alonso has embarked on a clear push for experience in this new chapter at Chelsea. Reports of interest in Sunderland's veteran midfielder Granit Xhaka surfaced earlier this summer, though that was largely attributed to his close relationship with the new Blues manager from their time together at Bayer Leverkusen. Nevertheless, this renewed pursuit of Henderson has made it abundantly clear just how much Alonso values seniority in his fresh vision for the club.

Chelsea fielded the youngest Premier League squad last season. In fact, it has been two years since a player aged over 30 made an appearance in a Chelsea shirt.
However, it would be reductive to assess Henderson's value purely on the basis of his experience. Despite his age, the 36-year-old covered more ground on average than any other regular Premier League player throughout the entire 2025–26 season, logging 7.4 miles per 90 minutes. Chelsea notoriously went through the first 34 matches of the 2025–26 league campaign without once outrunning their opponents.
