Jose Mourinho Vows to Conquer the Real Madrid Problem That Defeated His Predecessors

Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho has dismissed any worries about the on-pitch chemistry between Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham.

Although the three are undeniably among the finest players on the planet individually, Madrid have struggled to unlock the best from all of them simultaneously, with Bellingham, Vinícius and Mbappé each appearing to take turns dominating the limelight.

Now with Yan Diomande entering the equation, the task of getting the most out of every member of Madrid's costly quartet looks set to be a considerable challenge. Yet Mourinho remains confident he will encounter few problems.

"They are extraordinary players," Mourinho told Spanish reporters. "They want to play alongside extraordinary players. Elite players get frustrated when surrounded by lesser talent. The tactical compatibility can be trickier. [Carlo] Ancelotti found the perfect Brazil for Vini, [Didier] Deschamps found it for Kylian, [Thomas] Tuchel for Jude. It's harder to find the perfect Mourinho for all three. They have to make it work because they believe they can do it well."

"These are world-class players. Their positions are not incompatible. We are going to have a fantastic season together."

How Mourinho Can Make Expensive Quartet Work

The question of cohesion among these four players is not simply a matter of tactics. Mourinho has been deploying a 4-2-3-1 system during preseason, which accommodates Mbappé, Vinícius, Bellingham and Diomande in their preferred positions across the attacking line.

The real difficulties, however, emerge on the pitch. Much discussion has surrounded the fact that striker Mbappé tends to drift toward the left flank, occupying the same areas as Vinícius, who thrives on taking on defenders and feeding off a central forward. The pair have never been naturally in sync, though they have managed to produce results well enough so far.

Bellingham, for his part, flourished in his debut campaign when given the freedom to be Madrid's focal point. An attack-minded, box-crashing midfielder, he netted 19 goals in his first La Liga season before Mbappé's arrival, but that tally dropped by more than half in 2024–25.

"My role has shifted somewhat — I have to contribute more to the team and I lose a little effectiveness," Bellingham admitted of a dip in form that, it should be noted, began slightly before Mbappé joined the club.

Mourinho has made clear that "contributing to the team" is non-negotiable. His star attackers will all be reminded that they are part of a broader squad whose primary goal must be collective success, with personal honors serving as a welcome bonus.

Granting Mbappé, Vinícius and Bellingham the freedom to express themselves while simultaneously demanding the work rate and defensive discipline any strong team requires has proven an elusive balance at the Bernabéu. Mourinho appears unconcerned about his ability to find that solution, even as Diomande's addition introduces yet another layer of complexity.
