Kylian Mbappé Shatters 60-Year-Old Record, Clinching a Legendary Goalscoring Triple Crown

Kylian Mbappé Shatters 60-Year-Old Record, Clinching a Legendary Goalscoring Triple Crown

Few players relish breaking records quite like Kylian Mbappé, and the Real Madrid star has added yet another remarkable feat to his already decorated career following a goal-laden season and summer.

Mbappé is just the second player ever—and the first in six decades—to claim the top scorer title in his domestic league, the European Cup/Champions League and the World Cup. Portuguese icon Eusébio was the first to accomplish this triple crown back in 1966, standing alone in the history books until Mbappé came along.

The Frenchman claimed the Pichichi Trophy for the second consecutive season after netting 25 goals in La Liga. Mbappé also led the Champions League scoring charts last season, striking 15 times in just 11 outings.

He rounded off a sensational individual 2025–26 campaign by claiming the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot. Mbappé tallied 10 goals and four assists throughout the summer tournament, pipping Lionel Messi to become the first male player ever to win the World Cup Golden Boot on more than one occasion.

His exploits across North America also saw him become the all-time top scorer at the World Cup, a record he will undoubtedly extend come 2030.

The Elephant in the Room Is Only Getting Bigger

At this stage, it feels almost routine for Mbappé to etch his name across the record books for both club and country. After all, he has been making headlines since his teenage years, helping France lift the 2018 World Cup.

Yet Mbappé's latest milestone arrives with one stark reality: despite finishing as the top scorer in La Liga, the Champions League and the World Cup, he failed to lift a single piece of silverware in 2025–26.

Real Madrid ended the season second in La Liga, finishing eight points behind fierce rivals Barcelona. The 15-time European champions were also eliminated from the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage, losing to Bayern Munich.

France, meanwhile, were unable to overcome Spain in the World Cup semifinals before suffering a third-place defeat to England, bringing Didier Deschamps's reign to an anticlimactic close.

For all of Mbappé's goalscoring brilliance, he was unable to carry either his club or his country to glory—a narrative that is increasingly following the France international as he heads into his third campaign at Real Madrid.

More Records Are There for the Taking—But What About Trophies?

Mbappé will be among the players returning late to preseason after reaching the World Cup semifinals. But once he links up with the squad and begins working under new manager José Mourinho, his pursuit of major honors will kick off once more.

It is easy to envision Mbappé topping La Liga's scoring charts for a third straight season, particularly if Barcelona fail to bring in a marquee striker to fill the void left by Robert Lewandowski. That would make him the first player since Messi to win three successive Pichichi Trophies, and the first Real Madrid player since Hugo Sánchez to achieve the feat.

Mbappé will also fancy his chances of another explosive European run. The 27-year-old was just three goals short of eclipsing Cristiano Ronaldo's all-time record for goals in a single Champions League season—and that was with Los Blancos bowing out in the quarterfinals. Mbappé also missed a number of matches through injury.

The world will barely flinch if the France captain collects more personal accolades next season, but they will only truly matter if he can guide Real Madrid back to trophy-winning form.

The arrival of World Cup winner Marc Cucurella will certainly strengthen the side, as will the squad depth brought by fellow new recruits Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva. However, the decisive factor will once again be whether Mbappé can finally forge the winning chemistry with Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham needed to bring trophies back to the Bernabéu.
