There's an old Italian proverb: "There's no two without three." When it comes to Lamine Yamal's ever-growing collection of Kopa Trophies, those words couldn't be more fitting.
Only once before in the, admittedly brief, history of the award presented by France Football to the finest U-21 player on earth had anyone claimed the prize more than once. Yamal now stands alone with three extraordinary crowns. Astonishingly, he would still be eligible for a fourth the following year.
Barcelona's mercurial 19-year-old enjoyed the finest season of a career that has already reached remarkable heights. Yamal was the club's top scorer and most productive assist provider in a dominant league title triumph, contributing a goal or assist every 90 minutes he featured on the pitch.
Beyond the raw statistics, Yamal possesses that "special spark," to use his own words. In a world of strict tactical frameworks, there is something captivating about the timeless magic of a natural dribbler like Barcelona's No. 10.
"A fullback will have a coach who says: 'O.K., Lamine: what he does is...' I think of him as a robot, trying to stop me," Yamal told The Guardian earlier this year. "Robots can be almost perfect but a human will have something a robot doesn't."
While he is very much a fallible human being, there is something mechanical about Yamal's relentless accumulation of trophies. The three-time league champion added the World Cup to his European Championship to complete the full set of major international honors, which likely rank above his Kopa Trophies in an ever-growing personal cabinet of accolades.
Every Kopa Trophy Winner

Year | Winner | Club |
|---|---|---|
2018 | Kylian Mbappé | Paris Saint-Germain |
2019 | Matthijs de Ligt | Juventus |
2021 | Pedri | Barcelona |
2022 | Gavi | Barcelona |
2023 | Jude Bellingham | Real Madrid |
2024 | Lamine Yamal | Barcelona |
2025 | Lamine Yamal | Barcelona |
2026 | Lamine Yamal | Barcelona |
There must come a moment when the Ballon d'Or organizers consider renaming their accolade. As gifted a young talent as Real Madrid legend Raymond Kopa was, even he would be humbled by Yamal's dominance during what is still the early chapter of his career.
Beyond the club's brace-wearing talisman, Barcelona as a whole have made this award their own since 2020, when all prizes were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yamal's teammates Pedri and Gavi won it in back-to-back years once normality resumed, before Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham briefly interrupted the Catalan stranglehold.
Yamal may stand apart as the award's only multiple winner, but Jamal Musiala can also point to three separate seasons in which he secured a podium finish. None of them saw him claim the top spot. The Bayern Munich star was pipped by Pedri (finishing third), Gavi (third) and Bellingham (second) in successive years despite his fluid, weaving style of play.
Now 23 and no longer eligible for the award, Musiala has received just one nomination for the senior men's Ballon d'Or. In 2023, he failed to register a single point in the voting. Yamal, by contrast, has long since rendered the Kopa Trophy a footnote in his pursuit of the sport's ultimate individual prize.
