In under a year, Yamal's forward-thinking passing has become so abundant that he shattered the assist record previously held by Vinícius himself.

Raphinha grabbed the spotlight with his second hat-trick in four days for Barcelona during Saturday night's 3–1 comeback victory at Sevilla, but the Brazilian's teenage partner made sure the match was once again defined by Lamine Yamal.

Barcelona's extraordinary winger was met with relentless jeers and whistles throughout the weekend fixture in Seville. After drawing a particularly prolonged wave of hostility with a wayward effort in the opening half, Yamal gestured to the crowd to get even louder. The scoreline stood at 1–1 at that moment, with the first of Raphinha's treble having cancelled out Youssouf Fofana's opener, and it would be Yamal who pushed Barcelona ahead after the break.

Marking the 19-year-old is like trying to hold water in your hands. A cluster of Sevilla defenders surrounded Yamal when he brought the ball down from the Andalusian night sky in the 52nd minute, and they might well have been patting themselves on the back for steering their primary target away from goal. Yet Yamal twisted his still-developing frame in such an extraordinary way to thread a cross into the box for Raphinha to head crisply into the bottom corner.

That mesmerizing moment of brilliance represented the 50th goal contribution Yamal has recorded in his blossoming Barcelona career. No teenager has accumulated half a century of assists for a La Liga club in Opta's records. Vinícius Jr had previously been the youngest player to reach that milestone in Spain's top division, though he was 22 years old at the time.

Yamal may resist comparisons to Lionel Messi, but if he continues to leave all his peers so far behind, there are few other benchmarks that remain appropriate.

Messi developed far later than Yamal, reaching his 50th assist for the club only at age 23 on his 226th appearance. Yet during that same period, the compact Argentine had netted a remarkable 141 goals — nearly three times Yamal's current total.

Barcelona's greatest-ever player emerged as an unstoppable dribbler under Frank Rijkaard, weaving his way into dangerous areas without the clinical finishing that would later become his trademark. Pep Guardiola arrived at Camp Nou in 2008 and immediately identified the deadly goalscorer within. "With me," the new coach told Messi at their first meeting, "you'll score three or four goals a game." He wasn't far wrong.

Yamal has yet to develop that same ruthless instinct in front of goal, though he is hardly short of ways to influence matches.
