Legendary Sir Alex Ferguson Rushed to Hospital as Man Utd Stun Liverpool

Manchester United icon Sir Alex Ferguson was rushed to hospital from Old Trafford on Sunday prior to Manchester United's Premier League fixture against Liverpool.

The 84-year-old, who usually watches the Red Devils' matches from the directors' box, was in the tunnel area before the game began when he felt unwell. BBC Sport reported that Ferguson was transported by ambulance from the Theatre of Dreams to hospital as a "precautionary measure."

Before the incident occurred, the former boss had been welcoming guests at Old Trafford, among them cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra, who posted a photo alongside Ferguson on social media.

"A privilege, honour and dream come true to be invited to spend some quality time with Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of the game against Liverpool today at Old Trafford," Malhotra wrote on X.

It remains unclear exactly how long after the photos were taken that Ferguson was brought to hospital, but the Scotsman missed the dramatic 3–2 win for United, in which Kobbie Mainoo marked his recent contract extension by scoring the decisive goal in the 77th minute.

United are yet to release an official statement regarding Ferguson's condition, but The Athletic reported that the club described the situation as "not a medical emergency."

BBC Sport reinforced this, stating that club officials are "optimistic" that Ferguson will be "fit enough" to return home shortly.

Ferguson is broadly regarded as the greatest manager in Premier League history. He guided United to 13 Premier League titles across his 27-year reign, a record that Pep Guardiola is pursuing with Manchester City, though the Spaniard has only claimed six league titles so far.

The Red Devils also claimed two Champions League trophies under Ferguson's stewardship. Their 1998–99 European triumph came alongside Premier League and FA Cup glory that season, completing the only treble by an English club until Manchester City achieved the same feat in 2023.

Ferguson's Previous Health Battles

Some drew quick conclusions on Sunday, connecting Ferguson's hospitalization to past health struggles. In 2018, he suffered a severe brain hemorrhage that necessitated emergency surgery to preserve his life.

Ferguson reflected on the frightening ordeal in his documentary, Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In, where he confessed his biggest fears were losing his memory and the ability to communicate.

"All of my life I have appreciated the NHS, none more so with that experience, they were fantastic. And I owe it to them really," Ferguson said in the 2021 film.

When questioned about how the hemorrhage had affected him, Ferguson responded: "Probably not taking things too seriously in terms of knowing that you're vulnerable ... if I go tomorrow I'll be grateful for three years extra I had. That's a feeling I've had for quite a while now."

The Athletic reported there is "nothing at this stage" to indicate that Sunday's episode is connected to his prior health issues.
