Despite enduring a catastrophic second campaign at the helm of Liverpool — one that has been labeled "unacceptable" by all connected to the Merseyside club — Arne Slot reportedly retains the full support of the club's ownership despite mounting pressure for his removal.
Liverpool fans have grown increasingly restless throughout a wretched season. A failed Premier League title defense, early exits from domestic cup competitions and a underwhelming European run have all fueled supporter anger, with Slot inevitably bearing the brunt of the criticism.
The scrutiny on the Dutchman has mounted as the season has progressed, but The Athletic reports that Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) currently have no intention of parting company with Slot.
The 47-year-old's job is considered secure — at least for the time being — largely on the strength of delivering last season's Premier League title, which has earned him considerable goodwill. The club feels he warrants the opportunity to rebuild next season, and there are no indications that the dressing room has turned against him.
Contributing factors to Liverpool's struggles this season include the heartbreaking passing of Diogo Jota last summer, along with a chaotic transfer window that left the title-winning squad unbalanced and depleted following the exits of key figures such as Luis Díaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has been touted as a potential savior for the club, with the ex-Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid boss currently without a job. Should FSG's stance on Slot shift, the Spaniard would be among the frontrunners to take over.
Should Liverpool Stick With Arne Slot?
Slot's core challenge is not simply the decline in performances and results, or the absence of new trophies in Liverpool's cabinet this season. The bigger hurdle he faces is rebuilding trust with the fanbase.
Rightly praised for lifting the Premier League trophy in his debut English season and orchestrating a smooth transition following Jürgen Klopp's departure, patience has now worn thin among a significant portion of Liverpool supporters fed up with dull displays and poor results.
Liverpool have lacked any clear identity this season. Defensively passive, outmuscled in midfield and frequently toothless in attack, no area of Slot's team has performed to its capabilities. More worryingly, several players have declined — among them Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Ibrahima Konaté — with Dominik Szoboszlai the sole standout performing above his previous season's level.
There is little for Liverpool supporters to feel optimistic about, with the team visibly short on confidence and creativity. The same flat, uninspiring football continues week after week, and Slot has been unable to address the club's deep-rooted problems.
Under different circumstances, Slot might well deserve Liverpool's continued backing for at least another season. But with Alonso currently available — a man with a deep emotional bond to the club and one of the most exciting emerging coaches in the game — the Reds may come to regret not making a change, once again letting slip the chance to bring the 44-year-old back to Anfield.
Liverpool's squad now appears well-suited to the Spaniard's preferred 3-4-2-1 system. Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz were even part of his Bundesliga title-winning Leverkusen side. With a lack of natural wide forwards and two fullbacks better deployed as wingbacks, Liverpool's narrow profile could flourish within Alonso's favored structure.
While a managerial change always carries risk, continuing to back Slot is equally uncertain. The situation could deteriorate further, carrying over into next season despite another major summer investment.
If Liverpool can persuade Alonso to take the job, they absolutely should.
