Liverpool Face Villarreal: Everything You Need to Know Before the Big Clash

Liverpool enter Tuesday's Champions League fixture against Villarreal on the back of back-to-back victories, as Andoni Iraola prepares to face a well-known figure on the Anfield sideline.

The Yellow Submarine are now under the guidance of Iraola's former right-hand man, Iñigo Pérez, who eventually took charge at Rayo Vallecano after Iraola departed the Madrid outfit for Bournemouth in 2023, having initially attempted to follow his mentor to the English south coast before being denied a work permit.

Pérez steered Rayo to the Conference League final last campaign, and was named as Marcelino's replacement at Villarreal in June. Although the Yellow Submarine currently occupy a mid-table position in La Liga, Pérez delivered the club its first Champions League win since 2022 last week, defeating Napoli 3–1.

Six-time European champions Liverpool have opened the league phase with two victories, including a 2–1 win over Atlético Madrid at Anfield on Matchday 1. They then dismantled LASK in a 6–3 thrashing, and are riding high after mounting a comeback to beat Brentford over the weekend.

The Reds are still finding their footing under Iraola's tenure, but the results have been largely encouraging.

This is a momentous occasion for both coaches, as the long-standing friends go head-to-head for the very first time.

"We've shared so much together, so it's also an honor for me to face him in a Champions League match," Iraola said on Monday. He acknowledged that Tuesday's meeting will feel "a little bit strange" given their close bond, and noted that Villarreal's manager "knows everything" about him.

Nevertheless, it will require a tremendous effort from the visitors to claim three points on Merseyside. Iraola's Liverpool are still a team in development, but they rarely slip up at Anfield during Champions League evenings.

The Reds last crossed paths with Villarreal in the 2021–22 semifinals, securing a 5–2 aggregate victory before being undone by a Thibaut Courtois-inspired Real Madrid in the final.

Iraola confirmed that Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong will both be absent for Tuesday's match after sustaining injuries during Saturday's comeback win.

While Frimpong has picked up a "new injury," Iraola indicated that Szoboszlai's hamstring problem continues to linger. "We will need to be a little more patient until he is fully fit," the Liverpool manager said.

In his place, Ryan Gravenberch is expected to return to midfield after serving a one-game ban at the weekend. The Dutchman had been in fine form before collecting his second yellow card around the hour mark against Man City.

While Iraola is likely to make changes, with Bradley Barcola among those potentially given a breather, Alexander Isak is set to spearhead Liverpool's attack under the floodlights.

The Reds are also managing several long-term injury concerns, with Hugo Ekitiké, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley all remaining on the sidelines.

New boss Pérez has yet to stray from predecessor Marcelino's favored 4-4-2 shape, and Anfield supporters can expect two disciplined banks of four from the visitors on Tuesday.

Villarreal are missing Canada winger Tajon Buchanan through a hamstring problem, while Nicolas Pépé, who racked up 18 La Liga goal contributions this season, is out following eye surgery. In his absence, Pérez will rely on Georgian international Georges Mikautadze and experienced forward Gerard Moreno to spearhead the Yellow Submarine's attack.

Nathan Saliba, the player at the center of Vinícius Júnior's hair-pulling controversy, is expected to feature in midfield, while Portuguese international Renato Veiga will anchor Villarreal's backline on Merseyside.

Villarreal Predicted Lineup vs. Liverpool (4-4-2): Júnior; Mouriño, Navarro, Veiga, Romero; Saliba, Comesaña, Gueye, Moleiro; Moreno, Mikautadze.
