Liverpool squandered two separate leads as they fell 3–2 to Fenerbahçe, suffering their first Champions League defeat of the campaign.
The Reds were welcomed by former striker Dirk Kuyt on the sideline, with the Dutchman serving as caretaker manager of the Turkish club, and several other recognizable faces featured on the pitch. Romelu Lukaku, N'Golo Kanté and Ederson were among the ex-Premier League names determined to pull off a shock at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.
Heavy rainfall threatened to make a difficult away fixture even more treacherous for Liverpool, but they managed to edge ahead midway through the opening half. Amid Fenerbahçe having a penalty shout dismissed and rattling the crossbar, Trey Nyoni broke the deadlock with the aid of a fortunate deflection.
Their advantage lasted only four minutes, however, as Liverpool themselves fell victim to an unfortunate ricochet when Mason Greenwood's free kick caught Alisson off guard. The equalizer shifted the momentum as the visitors lost their grip on the game, though neither team could find a winner before the interval.
Andoni Iraola's side struggled to find a spark after the break, but the Spaniard's bold triple substitution changed the complexion of the match. Two of the replacements linked up as Cody Gakpo's delicate cross was met by Alexander Isak, who headed home with his very first touch.
Yet history repeated itself as Fenerbahçe responded swiftly, just as they had in the first half. Another English player made his mark as Archie Brown pounced on careless Liverpool defending, tapping into an unguarded net at the back post. Things would soon deteriorate further.
More slack defending undid the Premier League side late on, with Vedat Muriqi's header completing Fenerbahçe's comeback and ending Liverpool's unbeaten run in the league phase. It also marks consecutive losses across all competitions following Sunday's tight defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League.
Winners and Losers
Winners

There's no question that Trey Nyoni is becoming an ever more vital component of the Iraola setup. After being rewarded with a start against Arsenal at the weekend following a string of impressive outings, the teenager was kept in the XI for a grueling trip to hostile surroundings.
How did Nyoni handle being thrown into the spotlight before a passionate crowd on the European stage? With yet another remarkably assured display.
Always an option to receive the ball and possessing the quality to find teammates precisely regardless of the situation around him, this was a reminder of why the midfielder is held in such high regard on Merseyside. A superb performance was fittingly crowned by a memorable moment in the 25th minute as he opened his account for Liverpool.
The other teenager on the pitch, Rio Nguomha, matched the equally high standard set by his fellow academy product. With Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo all starting on the bench, Liverpool needed their dynamic 18-year-old to step up—and he delivered.
Completing seven dribbles and winning four fouls, Ngumoha was easily Liverpool's most lively and consistent attacking outlet. The youngster thrives in European football, benefiting from the additional space compared to Premier League encounters, and Fenerbahçe's backline will be relieved to have seen the last of him.
Losers

For the first time in his Liverpool career, summer signing Jérémy Jacquet found himself under intense scrutiny. The tall center back must accept responsibility for his part in Fenerbahçe's equalizer, as he turned into Greenwood's free kick, which deflected off his torso and past a helpless Alisson. A braver intervention would have kept Liverpool's lead intact for far longer.
Further doubts emerged over the Frenchman when Fenerbahçe took the lead late in the game, with Muriqi comfortably outjumping Jacquet to guide his header into the bottom corner.
Kostas Tsimikas was another who delivered a typically flawed outing, particularly when tasked with containing Greenwood. Lucky to escape without conceding a penalty for a two-handed push on the Englishman, the left back rarely impressed when the hosts directed play down his flank.
Liverpool Player Ratings vs. Fenebahçe (4-2-3-1)

*Ratings provided by FotMob*
GK: Alisson—6.6: Made several sharp saves to deny Fenerbahçe. Visibly frustrated with his defenders following the first two goals, though he might have done better to claim the aerial ball that Muriqi converted. Nearly handed the hosts a fourth in stoppage time.
RB: Joe Gomez—6.9: Delivered one outstanding ball across the goalmouth that would likely have resulted in an assist had Isak already been on the pitch. Dependable defensively as well.
CB: Jérémy Jacquet—5.9: The defender has set a strong benchmark in a Liverpool shirt so far, but he fell well short of it in Türkiye. Implicated in two of Fenerbahçe's three goals.
CB: Virgil van Dijk—6.3: Largely held his own against the physical Lukaku, coming out on top in most battles with the former Chelsea and Manchester United forward. Unable to hold together an underperforming defensive unit.
LB: Kostas Tsimikas—6.8: Far from Tsimikas's finest 76 minutes on a football pitch.
CM: Trey Nyoni—8.2: Yet another impressively mature showing from the 19-year-old, who will always cherish his first Liverpool goal scored in Istanbul.
CM: Alexis Mac Allister—6.8: Adequate in Liverpool's midfield. Below the level of his recent outings.
RW: Victor Muñoz—6.3: Displayed his blistering pace with repeated runs to the byline, frequently earning corners in the process. Lacked the decisive final product when it mattered most.
AM: Dominik Szoboszlai—6.7: An underwhelming return to the starting eleven, and he ended the match operating at right back. Switched off for Fenerbahçe's second equalizer.
LW: Rio Ngumoha—7.2: Ngumoha's electrifying footwork gave Fenerbahçe's defense a constant headache.
ST: Bradley Barcola—6.6: The Frenchman remains an unconventional stand-in for Alexander Isak, and there is little evidence he can be relied upon as a genuine option in the striker role. Peripheral for much of the match.
SUB: Alexander Isak (66' for Muñoz)—7.1: Fulfilled his immediate objective by briefly putting Liverpool back in front.
SUB: Florian Wirtz (66' for Gomez)—6.1: Barely featured during an unremarkable cameo appearance.
SUB: Cody Gakpo (66' for Ngumoha)—6.5: Provided a tempting cross that set up Isak, but his poor defensive header handed Fenerbahçe their second goal of the evening.
SUB: Milos Kerkez (76' for Tsimikas)—6.2: Reasonably solid.
SUB: Lewis Koumas (85' for Nyoni)—N/A
Subs not used: Freddie Woodman (GK), Giorgi Mamardashvili (GK), Ronald Araújo, Luke Chambers, James McConnell, Jayden Danns.
