Liverpool advanced to the Carabao Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday, defeating Chelsea 6–5 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1–1 following 90 minutes of normal time.
Two spot kicks provided the only real drama of a dull opening half under the Anfield lights. Morgan Rogers converted from the penalty spot after Ryan Gravenberch's clumsy foul, but Liverpool hit back just three minutes later when Cody Gakpo struck to restore parity.
The second half offered more action, with Liverpool testing Mike Penders through efforts from Ronald Araújo and Bradley Barcola. Giorgi Mamardashvili was also called into action at the other end, yet neither side could find a decisive goal before the final whistle.
The tense stalemate led to a penalty shootout, which Liverpool ultimately claimed. Kostas Tsimikas and Ryan Gravenberch both failed to convert from 12 yards, but misses from Valentín Barco, Emmanuel Emegha, and ultimately Wesley Fofana on the 16th kick sealed a spot in the last eight for Andoni Iraola's men.
Winner and Loser
Winner

With every game that passes, Trey Nyoni looks more and more like a player destined for the very top.
The 19-year-old has drawn widespread praise for a string of outstanding performances in the double pivot, and he put in another polished display against Chelsea's star-studded midfield. Nyoni's incisive forward passing and defensive intelligence stood out, but it is his remarkable composure that makes him such a compelling prospect.
Naturally, there are areas of his game that still need refinement, but the ceiling for this youngster appears almost limitless.
Loser

Iraola's rotated lineup still featured experienced heads, yet it was one of the club's senior players who showed the reckless impulsiveness of a teenager to hand Chelsea the advantage. Moisés Caicedo posed little threat inside Liverpool's box when Gravenberch unnecessarily barged into him from behind, gifting the visitors a penalty they fully deserved.
Just over three weeks after the Dutchman's red card in the 3–0 loss to Manchester City, another thoughtless decision proved damaging for Liverpool. With Nyoni shining and Alexis Mac Allister returning to top form, such lapses could put Gravenberch's place in the starting midfield at risk.
To make matters worse, he also missed his penalty in the shootout. A thoroughly miserable night for the midfielder.
Liverpool Player Ratings vs. Chelsea (4-3-3)

*Ratings provided by FotMob*
GK: Giorgi Mamardashvili—7.8: Could do nothing to stop Rogers' penalty and pulled off several key saves to keep Liverpool in the game. Then made a crucial shootout stop to deny Emegha from winning it for Chelsea.
RB: Joe Gomez—7.0: Faced a few tricky moments against Rogers, but was largely dependable against his fellow Englishman.
CB: Ronald Araújo—7.8: Following a heroic weekend showing, the Uruguayan delivered another high-energy performance. Defends with remarkable pace and intensity.
CB: Virgil van Dijk—6.9: Set a strong example in a heavily reshuffled backline, making several timely interventions to neutralize Chelsea's attacks.
LB: Kostas Tsimikas—6.9: The 30-year-old was inconsistent in possession, as has become familiar, but held firm defensively against the lively Pedro Neto. His penalty in the shootout, however, was woeful.
CM: Ryan Gravenberch—5.6: No justification for his reckless challenge on Caicedo, and there was little else to take from his performance. Careless in possession throughout.
CM: Trey Nyoni—7.1: It's clear why Iraola already has faith in Nyoni, who carries himself with the assurance of someone far older.
RW: Lewis Koumas—6.4: Registered just 12 touches in his hour on the pitch. Made virtually no impression on the game.
AM: James McConnell—6.5: Struggled to make his mark in an advanced midfield role and was cautioned for a deliberate handball. Failed to take his chance.
LW: Rio Ngumoha—6.9: The former Chelsea academy graduate gave his old club a reminder of what they let go with some electrifying runs past blue shirts. His energy is truly infectious.
ST: Cody Gakpo—7.6: Extended his fine record in the Carabao Cup by slotting home his penalty, though he was rarely involved in open play.
SUB: Florian Wirtz (59' for McConnell)—6.0: Really ought to have scored from eight yards out, but sent his effort straight into Levi Colwill. Did at least convert in the shootout.
SUB: Bradley Barcola (59' for Koumas)—6.4: Injected some energy from the bench and went close with a shot from the edge of the box.
SUB: Jérémy Jacquet (72' for Van Dijk)—6.1: Competent enough after coming on.
