Manchester City's unbeaten Premier League run came to an end on Saturday as they suffered a 2–1 defeat to Aston Villa, with Nicolas Jackson netting twice to seal the win.
The cloud of the guilty verdict continues to hang over the Cityzens, repeatedly casting doubt on what their Premier League results truly signify until a sanction is handed down, but there was little room for philosophical reflection after they fell behind to Jackson's stunning opener in just the sixth minute.
City responded with purpose at Villa Park, though they were unable to draw level before the interval. They regularly forced Zion Suzuki into acrobatic stops either side of two half-hearted penalty shouts, and Iliman Ndiaye went closest when his fierce effort cannoned off the outside of the post.
The visitors kept up the pressure after the break and were quickly rewarded when Erling Haaland's powerful header drew them level. However, their celebrations were brief as Villa regained the lead when Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to keep out Jackson's stinging drive.
Despite pushing hard for an equalizer to protect their unbeaten Premier League start, City ultimately fell short against a stubborn Villa backline—leaving the door open for title challengers Arsenal to pull level on points at the top of the table.
Winners and Losers
Winner

While not City's most polished performance of the season, there were some noteworthy individual contributions deserving of recognition. Iliman Ndiaye was one of the standout performers, capitalizing on Villa's tendency to push play into wide channels when sitting back defensively.
The summer signing's nimble footwork and blistering pace served as City's most dangerous outlet, so it came as little surprise that their equalizer originated from his ingenuity. A perfectly weighted delivery into the box found Haaland's grateful head.
Ndiaye produced several other inventive moments, relishing the chance to cut inside and shoot. One such attempt rattled the woodwork, while another was brilliantly kept out by Suzuki.
Losers

It has been a difficult spell for Marc Guéhi since City's guilty verdict. Whether the ruling has genuinely affected his form remains uncertain, but he has been making costly errors for both club and country regardless. Following a calamitous mistake for England in their 3–2 loss to Spain in late September, the centre-back handed Jackson his opener at Villa Park almost exactly a month later.
A dreadful first touch from Enzo Fernández's looping pass across the backline deflected into the path of John McGinn, who then set up Jackson. The finish was sharp and composed, but the opportunity would never have arisen without Guéhi's expensive error—one of several occasions where City, and Guéhi in particular, struggled to contain the former Chelsea striker.
As Villa's goalkeeper Suzuki repeatedly demonstrated his quality with a string of superb saves, Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to match the standard set by his counterpart.
The Italian was clearly culpable for Jackson's second goal. Granted, the shot was hit with real power, but it was struck straight at Donnarumma and somehow slipped beneath him. It is not the first time the City goalkeeper has found himself under scrutiny.
Man City Player Ratings vs. Aston Villa (4-2-3-1)

*Ratings provided by FotMob*
GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma—3.9: Absolutely had to save from Jackson on the hour. Simply not good enough from a supposedly elite goalkeeper.
RB: Abdukodir Khusanov—8.1: Shifted into central defence after the break following a lively duel with the impressive Johan Manzambi. Proved to be an improvement on Guéhi.
CB: Marc Guéhi—5.2: Repositioned to the right side of defence by Enzo Maresca, which appeared to unsettle him. Consistently struggled in duels with the lively Jackson, in addition to making the error that gifted Villa their early opener. Substituted at halftime as well.
CB: Rúben Dias—6.2: One crucial intervention denied what looked like a certain goal in the first half, but, like those around him, he occasionally found it difficult to cope with Villa's direct attacking play.
LB: Joško Gvardiol—7.3: Tested by Alysson, who was eager to take on his man at every opportunity, but still offered a genuine attacking threat going forward. Gvardiol would have been on the scoresheet were it not for a series of outstanding stops from Suzuki.
CM: Elliot Anderson—7.8: A commanding presence in the middle of the park, covering ground efficiently and winning the ball back with apparent ease. Worth every penny of his $154 million price tag—at least by today's inflated transfer market standards.
CM: Enzo Fernández—6.4: Worryingly ineffective in both halves of the pitch. The game largely passed Fernández by.
RW: Iliman Ndiaye—7.4: City's most dynamic attacking force throughout, causing real problems when cutting inside onto his left foot and ultimately teeing up Haaland's equalizer.
AM: Rayan Cherki—6.6: Following his outstanding midweek display against AEK Athens, this was a considerably more subdued showing from Cherki, who was taken off at halftime while already carrying a yellow card.
LW: Jérémy Doku—7.2: Kept largely quiet by Matty Cash, who dealt with the rapid Belgian without too many difficulties.
ST: Erling Haaland—7.5: Largely starved of service throughout—registering just eight touches in the opening half—but that is part of the game plan. Headed in the equalizer, which was one of the few clear openings that came his way.
SUB: Rico Lewis (46' for Guéhi)—6.2: Far less influential than during the rout of AEK Athens.
SUB: Phil Foden (46' for Cherki)—6.3: City desperately needed some moments of brilliance from Foden, but he was unable to deliver.
SUB: Ryan McAidoo (69' for Ndiaye)—6.5: Direct and confident in possession, even if he struggled to produce a final product.
Subs not used: Gerónimo Rulli (GK), Nico O'Reilly, Rayan Aït-Nouri, Vitor Reis, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Mateo Kovačić.
