The Shocking Reason Joao Pedro Is Sitting Out Chelsea's Clash Against Tottenham

Chelsea head into Saturday's London derby without their top scorer João Pedro in the matchday squad.

The absence of Pedro, who has contributed five goals and three assists this season, is a significant setback for the Blues. Rather than turning to the obvious replacement in Danny Welbeck, manager Xabi Alonso has opted for a more inventive solution.

Winger Morgan Rogers has been deployed as the central striker against their bitter rivals, creating room for youngster Geovany Quenda to earn his first Premier League start on the left flank.

Why João Pedro Is Not Playing for Chelsea

Chelsea have yet to offer any official explanation for Pedro's exclusion, but Kieran Gill has reported that the striker has sustained an injury requiring further medical scans.

A knee issue had already caused Pedro to miss the 3–0 loss to Brentford prior to the international break and ruled him out of the Brazil squad during the September-October window, though he did return to action shortly after.

Pedro scored twice against Bournemouth but failed to find the net in the most recent outing against Everton, featuring for 92 minutes before Welbeck came on late. There was no visible indication of injury, and Alonso made no mention of any concerns during his pre-match press conference.

Malo Gusto has returned to the squad after recovering from illness, while injured Pep Chavarría and Emiliano Martínez — who underwent surgery on a broken jaw sustained last match — are both absent. Mike Penders steps in for the Argentine in the starting lineup.

Summer recruit Emmanuel Emegha also remains unavailable. The ex-Strasbourg forward suffered an injury during preseason but is believed to be nearing a long-awaited debut, which would have been particularly timely given Pedro's unexpected absence against Spurs.
