Man Utd Eye Ederson To Fill The Void Left By Casemiro — Here's How They Could Look

Manchester United are continuing to evaluate central midfield targets ahead of a pivotal summer transfer window as the club prepares to compete in the Champions League next season. Reports suggest that interest in Atalanta's box-to-box enforcer Éderson is gaining momentum.

United will be looking to bring in at least two new midfielders, factoring in Casemiro's expected exit—along with the possibility that Manuel Ugarte could also depart—and a shortage of depth in the center of the park.

Éderson could prove considerably more affordable than several other options, as he enters the final year of his Atalanta contract, in contrast to targets like Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Carlos Baleba, whose fees could push into nine-figure territory.

Sky Sports report that interest in the $54 million (£40 million)-valued Éderson has "stepped up," and the same applies to West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes. The indication is that United want to be ready to submit offers once their priority targets are confirmed.

While both Sky Sports and the Daily Mail now suggest that recent reports of an Éderson deal already being agreed were premature, United's prospects of completing a transfer have improved after Atlético Madrid shifted their focus toward Wolverhampton Wanderers' João Gomes.

Éderson Complements Kobbie Mainoo Skillset

Should Éderson make his way to Old Trafford, his precise role and standing will hinge on who else the club brings in. The 26-year-old has only a slim chance of featuring at the World Cup, though he has been included in Brazil's preliminary squad, which could simplify transfer negotiations.

It's likely he could be signed far earlier than someone like Anderson, who will be involved in the World Cup with England. On the logistical side, United will also benefit from the fact that neither Tonali nor Baleba will be at the tournament, after Italy and Cameroon both failed to qualify.

If Kobbie Mainoo—firmly reinstated to the starting eleven by Michael Carrick, who now appears set to become the club's permanent manager—operates as the deep-lying playmaker, Éderson would be a natural complement as a dynamic ball-winner in the mould of Casemiro.

The Atalanta midfielder looks tailor-made for the Premier League. "He has two main strengths," said Tiago Nunes, Éderson's former coach at Corinthians, speaking to Sky Sports in 2024. "Firstly, on the pitch, he has great physical strength, with the ability to play box-to-box, back and forth, sustaining the pace of the game. Secondly, he has a very strong mentality, with a very clear awareness of what he wants."

Lining up alongside Mainoo, with Bruno Fernandes operating in the No. 10 position ahead of them, should deliver the right kind of balance in midfield—an area where United have at times struggled for control during the 2025–26 campaign.

$189 Million Midfield Plan

Manchester United's layered approach to midfield recruitment could result in as many as three new arrivals, each drawn from a different price range.

The aforementioned Mail report outlines an ideal scenario involving one $108 million (£80 million) signing, one $54 million (£40 million) signing, and one $27 million (£20 million) signing.

Anderson, Tonali, Baleba and Kees Smit are among the top-tier candidates. Éderson sits in the middle bracket alongside Mateus Fernandes, Tyler Adams and Adam Scott. Potential fits for the most affordable category include the frequently linked Javi Guerra, or even former United midfielder James Garner.
