Manchester United's toothless display went without consequence at the Stadium of Light as they settled for a scoreless stalemate with Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.
The absence of any real stakes undoubtedly contributed to a flat first-half showing from Man Utd, as their hosts were comfortably the dominant side before the interval. Zero shots on target and a mere five touches inside the Sunderland box highlighted a disinterested performance, with the Red Devils having already wrapped up Champions League qualification following last Sunday's victory over Liverpool.
United showed modest improvement after the break, but their tepid attacking play left Sunderland largely untroubled. Fortunately, Michael Carrick could rely on his backline, which withstood several threatening moments to preserve a clean sheet and claim another point for United's seasonal tally.
A forgettable outing matters very little for the Red Devils, who had already accomplished their primary objective for the season with games remaining.
One Thing We Can't Ignore

The visit to the Stadium of Light served as a useful dress rehearsal for United as they set up without the outgoing Casemiro. The Brazilian departs at the end of the campaign and his absence through injury gave the Red Devils a preview of what life looks like without their combative defensive midfielder.
With fellow absentee Manuel Ugarte also unavailable, Carrick turned to Mason Mount in the double pivot alongside Kobbie Mainoo, but the ex-Chelsea man did little to ease concerns. Admittedly, Mount is far from a natural holding midfielder and was predictably overpowered by more physical opponents, but the vulnerability in United's midfield underlined just how vital Casemiro is to the team's equilibrium.
Sunderland's ability to exploit the Casemiro-shaped void in the first half was a worrying sight for Carrick, whose side endured relentless pressure as they struggled to cope with the home side's intensity.
Carrick made adjustments at half-time, with Mainoo slotting into the holding role as a lone No. 6, while Mount advanced further up the pitch and Bruno Fernandes tucked in slightly deeper. Yet the changes had minimal impact as Sunderland continued to surge forward, repeatedly exploiting a vulnerable center as they chased what would have been a thoroughly merited opener.
It served as a timely wake-up call regarding how crucial it is for United to identify a suitable replacement for Casemiro. That will be no easy feat.
Man Utd Player Ratings vs. Sunderland (4-2-3-1)

*Ratings provided by FotMob*
GK: Senne Lammens—8.9: Made amends for last weekend's error against Liverpool with a commanding all-round performance in goal. Stood out with a number of well-timed stops.
RB: Noussair Mazraoui—8.2: Solid against the lively Chemsdine Talbi, rarely coming off second best in duels with his international counterpart.
CB: Harry Maguire—7.1: Seldom pushed out of a comfortable rhythm, though he did lose sight of Noah Sadiki for Sunderland's clearest opening of the first half.
CB: Lisandro Martínez—7.4: Had occasional difficulty dealing with the physicality of Brian Brobbey, but largely managed Sunderland's attacking threats with composure.
LB: Luke Shaw—6.9: Extended his run of starting every Premier League fixture this season and delivered another composed defensive performance.
CM: Mason Mount—6.9: Casemiro's injury absence was keenly felt on Wearside. Mount unsurprisingly found it difficult to replicate his defensive contributions.
CM: Kobbie Mainoo—7.1: Felt the void left by Casemiro as he was required to cover considerably more ground than usual in midfield. Still characteristically elegant in possession, however.
RW: Amad Diallo—6.4: The former Sunderland loanee showed plenty of effort, but gave the ball away far too frequently throughout. Failed to produce the decisive moments on his return to the Stadium of Light.
AM: Bruno Fernandes—7.4: Unable to produce his trademark brilliance as he missed another opportunity to match the Premier League single-season assists record.
LW: Matheus Cunha—7.2: Following back-to-back goals against Chelsea and Liverpool, Cunha failed to replicate his recent form. Largely anonymous from the outset and wasted two good opportunities in stoppage time.
ST: Joshua Zirkzee—6.0: Contributed next to nothing leading the line as United felt the absence of the injured Benjamin Šeško's athleticism.
SUB: Patrick Dorgu (65' for Zirkzee)—6.1: Injected some energy, but little else of note.
SUB: Bryan Mbeumo (75' for Amad)—5.9
Subs not used: Altay Bayındır (GK), Diogo Dalot, Ayden Heaven, Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia, Jack Fletcher, Tyler Fletcher.
