Paul Scholes says the "jury is still out" on Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, despite the Belgian's strong debut season at Old Trafford and praise from Sir Alex Ferguson.
The goalkeeper position had been a persistent issue for the Red Devils since David de Gea's form began to deteriorate toward the end of his long stint as United's No. 1. The club brought in his replacement, André Onana, in 2023 following the Cameroonian's role in helping Inter Milan reach the Champions League final, but he was unable to deliver the consistency needed over two seasons as the first choice.
Onana is currently in his second season on loan at Trabzonspor and appears unlikely to ever feature for the Red Devils again.
United signed the relatively obscure Lammens from Royal Antwerp at the close of the 2025 summer transfer window for a modest $24.5 million. Lammens swiftly established himself as United's No. 1, completing his debut campaign without any serious questions arising about his position.
It appeared Manchester United had finally found stability in goal, but club legend Scholes has now raised the question of whether Lammens is the type of goalkeeper capable of inspiring the Red Devils to a Premier League title.
Paul Scholes Still Isn't Fully Convinced by Senne Lammens
Lammens is determined to "leave a legacy" at the Theatre of Dreams. He cited Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar as United goalkeepers he would one day love to be mentioned alongside, but for the Belgian to earn such recognition, United would need to start claiming football's most prestigious honors once more.
They have gone without a Premier League title since 2013 and have struggled to make a meaningful impact in the Champions League since Pep Guardiola's Barcelona dismantled them in the 2011 final.
Lammens's time with the Red Devils has shown promise so far, yet Scholes remains far from sold.
"What team have you seen win the Premier League without a top-class goalkeeper?" Scholes rhetorically asked co-host Nicky Butt on their The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast.
"Lammens might be that; I don't know; I think the jury's probably still out on that," he added.
The 51-year-old at least questions whether Lammens is the goalkeeper to guide United back to glory, a view that contrasts with that of his former manager Ferguson, who was visibly impressed by the Belgian's displays early in his Old Trafford career.
"The goalkeeper has been outstanding. He's only played three or four games and he's looking really good," the Scot remarked last November.
How Lammens Compares to Other Premier League Goalkeepers
Scholes pointed to Liverpool's Alisson and Arsenal's David Raya as the standout shot-stoppers who have helped propel their respective clubs to Premier League titles in recent seasons.
Statistically, however, both were arguably surpassed by Lammens last season. The Belgian conceded more than either, but according to FotMob, he 'prevented' more goals than both. Only Gianluigi Donnarumma of Manchester City was more effective as a shot-stopper, preventing 5.8 goals compared to Lammens' 4.4.
Lammens's save percentage of 66.9% placed him 14th in the Premier League, with 10 goalkeepers recording more clean sheets than the former Antwerp star's eight (8).
His save percentage has dipped to 58.8% at the start of the 2026–27 campaign, and he has actually underperformed as a shot-stopper. He has prevented -0.5 goals across four matches, indicating the Belgian has conceded more than expected.
While it is reasonable to suggest Lammens has not yet reached the upper echelon of goalkeeping talent, he is certainly not among Man Utd's chief concerns following a disappointing defeat in the Manchester derby.
