Manchester United's search for midfield reinforcements this summer has expanded to include Morocco's highly coveted teenage star Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Bouaddi's rise has been one of the standout storylines of the World Cup thus far. The 18-year-old only switched his international allegiance to Morocco from France in May, yet has impressed in matches against Brazil, Scotland and the Netherlands, helping his nation advance to the round of 16.
According to Sky Sports, early interest in Bouaddi has since been followed by "further checks" from the Old Trafford side. His next opportunity to be scouted comes when Morocco takes on Canada this Saturday.
A move for Brazil's Éderson appears virtually sealed, though Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali are no longer available after departing for a combined £301 million ($402 million). United seem intent on keeping their midfield recruitment options open.
While Bournemouth's Alex Scott and Real Madrid's Aurélien Tchouaméni remain of significant interest, Bouaddi has also entered the picture alongside Felix Nmecha and Sander Berge. The club has kept tabs on the latter intermittently since 2020, when he made his name at Genk before going on to represent Sheffield United, Burnley and Fulham over the following six years.
Bouaddi Commands Big Transfer Fee

Manchester United ultimately stepped aside and allowed Tottenham to sign Mateus Fernandes unchallenged, unwilling to meet West Ham's £85 million ($113.5 million) valuation. Tonali is set to be sold for £100 million ($133.5 million) once his transfer from Newcastle is finalized, while Anderson—at £116 million ($155 million)—represents a record fee for an English player.
However, clubs tend to benchmark their asking prices against recent sales, and Bouaddi is unlikely to come cheap. Early projections indicate Lille will demand somewhere between £68.5 million ($91.5 million) at the lower end and £85.7 million ($114.4 million) at the higher end.
Bouaddi is far from an unknown quantity. While he may be a newcomer to senior international football, the young midfielder has already completed two full seasons in France's Ligue 1—having made his Lille debut back in October 2023, just days after turning 16.
What is Bouaddi's Style of Play, Best Player Comparison?

At a price point comparable to or below Fernandes, Bouaddi represents strong value given his younger age and higher level of experience—his career résumé includes 25 appearances in European competition, nine of which came in the Champions League. Tonali and Anderson both cost considerably more, though not necessarily with greater justification.

Stylistically, Bouaddi could serve as a natural successor to Casemiro. He is composed in possession, capable of driving play out from defense, and demonstrates strong positional awareness, drawing comparisons to Rodri. The Manchester City midfielder is slightly more physically imposing and can influence games in the final third despite his defensive role. Bouaddi has yet to score in 102 senior appearances, but retains enormous potential for growth.
As a point of reference, it has only been in the past three seasons that 27-year-old Declan Rice has developed into a more reliable goal-scoring threat.
