Ex-Manchester United forward Rasmus Højlund has officially sealed a permanent move to Napoli following a fruitful season-long loan spell with the Italian club.
The 23-year-old, who originally joined Old Trafford for $96.8 million (£72 million) in 2023, contributed to Napoli's Supercoppa Italiana triumph and Serie A runners-up finish. The club's Champions League qualification along the way activated the clause for Højlund's permanent transfer.
The total deal, inclusive of the Denmark international's loan fee, amounts to $58.1 million (£43.2 million). United were unable to recoup their original outlay, but ESPN reports the proceeds are set to finance the acquisition of Atalanta midfielder Éderson — a consolation for the Red Devils.
Under Antonio Conte's guidance, Højlund rediscovered his best form, tallying 16 goals and eight assists across 44 appearances in all competitions. His first season in Napoli's blue kit provided the fresh start he so badly needed after two difficult years at United.
What Went Wrong for Højlund at Man Utd?

Højlund arrived in Manchester weighed down by his enormous price tag at just 20 years of age. The striker, who found it difficult to adapt to the Premier League, was afforded little patience by the club's fanbase.
It took 15 league matches before Højlund opened his Premier League account, though he hit the ground running in the Champions League, netting five times in his opening four outings. By the end of his debut season, the No. 9 had accumulated 16 goals — a decent return given his injury struggles and United's lowly eighth-place finish.
United did claim the 2023–24 FA Cup that term, offering a flicker of optimism heading into 2024–25. However, that campaign proved disastrous for both the club and Højlund. Tolerance for the high-profile signing had worn thin, as fitness and confidence issues once again stifled his output.
Højlund's playing time dwindled under Ruben Amorim, and he wrapped up 2024–25 with just four Premier League goals and six in the Europa League — further evidence that he was better suited to continental football than the relentless physicality of the Premier League.
Yet 26 goals in 95 appearances simply fell short of expectations for a $96.8 million signing, regardless of the chaos surrounding Old Trafford. The summer arrival of Benjamin Šeško ultimately proved to be the decisive factor in pushing Højlund to seek regular football elsewhere.
Man Utd Enter New Era Under Michael Carrick

As Højlund flourished in Italy, United reached a crisis point that led to Amorim's departure. Michael Carrick stepped in as caretaker for the remainder of the season, promptly scrapping his predecessor's back three and restoring Bruno Fernandes to the No. 10 position — breathing new life into the side.
Under Carrick, United climbed the Premier League table to finish third, securing a return to Champions League football. With just two defeats under the Englishman's watch, the groundwork has been laid for what could be a landmark 2026–27 campaign.
To genuinely compete for trophies and manage a packed schedule next season, United require fresh additions. Carrick, who has since been confirmed as permanent manager, has identified replacing Casemiro as his foremost priority.
The 20-time league winners have reportedly reached a preliminary $47 million (£35 million) agreement for Éderson as the first move in strengthening their squad. United are also expected to pursue further midfield cover and a new left back.
Ultimately, Højlund's permanent switch to Napoli proved beneficial for all involved, even if United may still rue spending close to nine figures on the former Atalanta striker.
