Man Utd Surge Closer to Champions League Glory With Dominant Display Against Brentford

Manchester United have all but secured their spot in next season's Champions League after claiming a 2–1 win over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

Both sides exchanged blows in an evenly contested first half, but it was United who made it count, with Casemiro and Benjamin Šeško netting to hand the hosts a comfortable advantage heading into the interval. The brilliant Bruno Fernandes chipped in with yet another assist, moving to within one of equaling the Premier League record—and he could easily have had more.

Michael Carrick's side were less sharp after the break, and Mathias Jensen struck a stunning late goal to drag Brentford back into it and inject some tension into the closing stages. However, the Red Devils held firm and have now won six of their seven home matches under Carrick, sitting comfortably in third place.

With just four fixtures left to play, United boast an 11-point cushion over Brighton in sixth, making a top-five finish and a return of Champions League football to Old Trafford next season virtually certain.

Heroes and Villain

Heroes

Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes looks like a man playing in a different league entirely, operating in a form that has him producing the finest football of his career. His assist for United's second goal leaves him just one away from matching Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne's Premier League single-season assist record of 20.

The Portuguese maestro arguably should have set the new benchmark on Monday night, having created four chances in the first half alone. It appears only a matter of time before Fernandes surpasses the record, which would make him a deserving frontrunner for the Premier League Player of the Season award.

Senne Lammens, Kobbie Mainoo, and goalscorers Casemiro and Šeško were also pivotal to United's victory.

Villain

Amad Diallo

It was a night to forget for Amad Diallo, who not only turned in United's worst individual display, but whose glaring misses badly let his teammates down on multiple occasions.

Diallo had an open goal at his mercy inside the first two minutes after Mainoo brilliantly beat four players—including the goalkeeper—to set up the Ivorian. Yet Diallo failed to convert, instead directing his effort straight at the only Brentford defender in a position to block it, robbing Mainoo of what would have been a career highlight.

He then squandered two further clear-cut opportunities that would have contributed to Fernandes's record-breaking chase. First, he produced a weak close-range header, and then he simply misjudged his run, having the ball ruled out for offside after putting it in the net. Given that Diallo was cutting in from the left wing with a clear view of Brentford's defensive line, being caught offside was an inexcusable lapse in positional awareness.

Carrick had seen enough of Diallo's profligacy, and the 23-year-old was substituted at half-time.

Man Utd Player Ratings vs. Brentford (4-2-3-1)

Casemiro

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Senne Lammens—7.5: Produced three vital stops that could have easily allowed Brentford to level in the first half. Had no chance with Jensen's thunderous strike.

RB: Diogo Dalot—7.0: Found it difficult whenever Mikkel Damsgaard and Keane Lewis-Potter linked up on his side. Grew into the game as it went on but never looked entirely at ease.

CB: Harry Maguire—8.1: Continues to be a dominant force from set-pieces, teeing up Casemiro's opener shortly after nearly heading in himself. Commanding in the air throughout.

CB: Ayden Heaven—7.4: Tasked with keeping Igor Thiago quiet, which was never going to be straightforward, but Heaven more than held his own against the Brazilian with some timely interventions. Another encouraging performance from the young defender.

LB: Luke Shaw—7.4: A subdued outing from Shaw, who once again had to come off early due to a fitness concern. United will hope it's nothing serious, though Shaw's injury record gives little cause for optimism.

DM: Casemiro—8.9: Netted his ninth Premier League goal of the campaign—the most prolific scoring season of his career. A display that underscored just how much United will miss him when he leaves this summer.

DM: Kobbie Mainoo—7.8: Channeled his inner Lionel Messi with a breathtaking run that deserved to produce the opening goal inside two minutes.

RW: Bryan Mbeumo—7.3: Mbeumo can count himself fortunate that Diallo's performance on the opposite flank was even worse, as he was far from his best himself. Looked noticeably sluggish and inconsistent outside of a few bright moments.

AM: Bruno Fernandes—8.2: Orchestrated United's play and had the crowd on their feet with a series of sublime deliveries. Picked up another assist but arguably should have broken the Premier League single-season record on the night.

LW: Amad Diallo—6.5: Owes Mainoo a public apology for squandering what would have been the assist of the season, and owes Fernandes one too for apparently forgetting the offside rule and denying him yet another assist.

ST: Benjamin Šeško—8.1: Required to lead the line largely on his own for much of the match, he was effective with his back to goal and his defensive work rate didn't go unnoticed by the Old Trafford faithful. Got his reward when Fernandes slipped him through to score United's second.

SUB: Noussair Mazraoui (46' for Diallo)—7.1: Dependable defensively after coming on.

SUB: Leny Yoro (73' for Shaw)—6.1: Barely registered in his 20-plus minutes on the pitch.

SUB: Mason Mount (74' for Mbeumo)—6.4: Another largely invisible cameo from Mount.

SUB: Joshua Zirkzee (88' for Šeško)—N/A

Subs not used: Altay Bayındır (GK), Tyrell Malacia, Patrick Dorgu, Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Shea Lacey.
