Man Utd vs. Liverpool: Reliving the Five Most Explosive Clashes in Their Legendary Rivalry

"There are big games and fierce rivalries that we share with other clubs," Manchester United manager Michael Carrick reflected ahead of his first managerial encounter with Liverpool, "but this one is certainly right up there in the history books."

Any fixture between the two most decorated clubs in English football is must-watch television. Fascinatingly, the pair have rarely dominated simultaneously; Liverpool and Manchester United have occupied the top two positions in the top flight in only five of their 132 years of competition. Yet this match carries its own unique weight and significance.

"It's a standout fixture," Carrick insisted, pointing to "the ups and downs," "the excitement and entertainment" and "the raw emotion."

"It makes it a truly special occasion." The most recent editions have been particularly compelling.

The gloriously chaotic nature of this seven-goal FA Cup quarterfinal spectacle was perfectly illustrated by United's defensive lineup in the closing stages: right winger Antony was deployed at left back alongside attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who was directing play from the heart of defense.

Scott McTominay's opener in the 10th minute for the hosts had been long consigned to memory by that stage. Liverpool forged a 2–1 advantage on the stroke of halftime before Antony, still operating in attack, forced extra time in the 87th minute. Harvey Elliott nudged the visitors back in front only for Marcus Rashford to cancel out his effort.

As this frantic contest threatened to spill into a penalty shootout, Amad Diallo snatched the winner in the 121st minute. In the 122nd minute, he was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card for removing his shirt in celebration. United's makeshift backline somehow held firm for the remaining seconds.

Man Utd 2–2 Liverpool (April 7, 2024)

Barely a month after eliminating Liverpool from the FA Cup, Manchester United dealt a significant blow to their fierce rivals' Premier League title aspirations, ensuring Jürgen Klopp would not depart on a high note.

United were denied all three points from a disciplined counter-attacking display only by Mohamed Salah's late spot-kick. That offered little comfort to the frustrated visitors. "It feels like a defeat," Virgil van Dijk lamented at the final whistle.

Man Utd 0–3 Liverpool (Sept. 1, 2024)

Liverpool celebrating.

A dominant Liverpool display in Arne Slot's maiden experience of this rivalry made for uncomfortable viewing for Manchester United supporters. Mercifully for them, few remained inside Old Trafford to witness Mohamed Salah add to Luis Díaz's first-half double as the Theatre of Dreams emptied at the break.

Casemiro also departed, though his exit was enforced by a halftime substitution from Erik ten Hag after the Brazilian midfielder struggled through the opening 45 minutes.

Slot was so satisfied with his team's showing that he openly explained how he had tactically outmaneuvered Ten Hag in his post-match interview with Sky Sports.

Liverpool 2–2 Man Utd (Jan. 5, 2025)

Lisandro Martínez celebrating.

The atmosphere surrounding Manchester United was deeply gloomy as they prepared to travel to runaway league leaders Liverpool in January 2025. Coming off four straight defeats and a run of seven consecutive goals conceded, there were genuine fears that Ruben Amorim's side could suffer a humiliation similar to the 7–0 thrashing Ten Hag's team endured in 2023.

Yet, that's not always how football unfolds.

United produced arguably their finest display throughout Amorim's troubled tenure amid a Merseyside snowstorm. Lisandro Martínez drove the visitors into a well-deserved lead before Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah responded swiftly. Amad Diallo grabbed an 80th-minute equalizer to salvage some vital pride for the Red Devils.

Liverpool 1–2 Man Utd (Oct. 19, 2025)

Harry Maguire

Manchester United's wait for a victory at Anfield had extended to nearly a decade before Harry Maguire powered home the decisive goal in a 2–1 triumph in October 2025. United had broken the deadlock inside 63 seconds before Cody Gakpo eventually leveled matters in the 78th minute.

Just as it seemed United's spirited performance would yield only a point, Maguire rose above the red shirts to deliver the winning goal worth, in his own words at least, "more than three points."

"It's massive for our club, for our supporters and it's a wonderful memory they will carry with them."
