Marcus Rashford Set For Stunning Showdown With Former Boss Ruben Amorim

Nineteen months ago, Ruben Amorim made headlines by declaring he would sooner field his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital than play Marcus Rashford for Manchester United.

The jaw-dropping remarks followed Amorim's decision to leave Rashford out of his matchday squad for an 11th consecutive game in 2024–25. The manager found himself at an impasse with the England international, who had publicly stated he was seeking a "new challenge" away from the club he had represented for more than a decade.

Rashford was relegated to the club's "bomb squad" last summer after returning from a loan stint at Aston Villa, before eventually joining Barcelona on a temporary basis. The winger played a key role in helping the Catalans claim La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, while Amorim was dismissed in January.

Despite Rashford's vocal wish to stay with the Spanish champions, Barcelona chose not to activate his purchase option, sending the 28-year-old back to Old Trafford, where he remains contracted through June 2028.

Michael Carrick is now the man in the dugout, offering his compatriot a fresh start this preseason. Yet Rashford may still find it impossible to fully leave Amorim behind.

Rashford in Line to Come Face to Face With Amorim

Next Saturday, Aug. 15, United will square off against AC Milan in their final preseason fixture ahead of the 2026–27 campaign. The Rossoneri are now under Amorim's charge, having replaced Massimiliano Allegri back in June.

Had the match been scheduled earlier in United's preseason calendar, Rashford would have comfortably sidestepped a reunion with his former manager. The forward has been enjoying a well-deserved break following the 2026 World Cup and has yet to link up with the Red Devils, much like Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martínez.

The latter pair are expected back on Monday for the second-to-last leg of United's preseason tour in the Republic of Ireland, with Rashford likely to follow suit.

United's Remaining Preseason Fixtures

Carrick would likely be reluctant to throw Rashford straight into the Leeds United fixture just days after the winger returns from his break. As a result, Rashford's much-anticipated comeback could arrive with Amorim standing on the opposing touchline.

The match already carries significant weight, as it will mark the first time Amorim faces his former club since his turbulent spell ended seven months ago. Of the 63 games the Portuguese tactician oversaw at United, more than a third resulted in defeat. He also managed just 15 victories across 47 Premier League outings.

Amorim's tenure was riddled with fiery press conferences and controversial decisions, with his persistent criticism of Rashford's training attitude frequently making the headlines. Now, the 41-year-old must not only go up against the man who steered his struggling squad to third in the Premier League, but also the player he effectively pushed out of Manchester.

The preseason friendly may well carry more compelling narratives than United's Premier League curtain-raiser against Hull City on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Rashford Hoping to Keep Momentum Rolling

Following two difficult final seasons in the Premier League, Rashford breathed new life into his career in Spain, contributing 14 goals and 11 assists across 49 appearances for Barcelona.

Much of that output came with limited playing time, making the figures all the more remarkable given that he spent a large portion of the season operating in the shadow of Raphinha.

He also featured for England at the 2026 World Cup, earning a place in Thomas Tuchel's squad while notable names such as Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Harry Maguire, and Trent Alexander-Arnold were left out. Rashford contributed a goal and an assist on North American soil.

The winger performed admirably in his limited outings and will be eager to sustain that form—otherwise he risks slipping back into irrelevance once more.
