Manchester United are reportedly planning to sign West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville this summer, though only if Marcus Rashford departs Old Trafford.
Summerville has emerged as a potential option on the left flank in recent weeks, following West Ham's drop from the Premier League. The position had been flagged several months ago as an area requiring reinforcement, with Michael Carrick lacking a natural fit there as he steered United to a third-place finish and a Champions League berth.
Matheus Cunha filled the role during the latter part of the campaign, but doing so limits his effectiveness in central positions and leaves the team short of width on that side.
United were initially connected with Yan Diomande, who RB Leipzig value at €100 million (£85 million, $115 million). However, the need to distribute the summer budget across several positions makes more affordable options like Summerville increasingly attractive. Even after signing two midfielders, the squad still requires at least one more, along with likely a left back and a left winger.
Rashford could have addressed the latter need himself—almost like a new arrival following 18 months on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona. Yet while The Guardian describes an "uneasy truce" that is expected to see Rashford return for preseason training in three weeks, United's "preference" remains securing him a move elsewhere.
Should that happen, Summerville is now the primary target. The 24-year-old Dutchman is expected to be available for approximately £30 million ($40.5 million). Roma have been strongly linked as a potential destination, though reports from Italy indicate no agreement has been reached between player and club at this point.

At present, Summerville is not defined by his statistics alone. Last season was his most productive in the Premier League, contributing nine goals and assists across 31 appearances in the competition.
What Manchester United would be acquiring, however, is raw talent with significant room to develop. Summerville's pace, agility, and direct style align well with the traditional 'United Way.' His attributes suit fast counter-attacks and transitions — the foundation on which Sir Alex Ferguson's sides were often built — while his strong defensive work rate would endear him to supporters.

United would not be signing a complete player in Summerville, which is reflected in his asking price. Despite his natural ability, he would need careful development to sharpen his decision-making and deliver consistency in key moments.

The positive side, however, is that he would not carry the full burden of expectation on his own. Summerville would likely share left-wing duties with Patrick Dorgu, who is also still developing, while in certain games and situations Cunha could still reclaim the position.
Summerville offers both immediate squad depth and long-term potential, and importantly represents good value for money at a time when transfer fees for the game's most exciting young talents continue to rise.
