Mbappe Races Against Clock To Return For High-Stakes El Clasico Showdown

Real Madrid's 1–1 stalemate on the road against Real Betis would have been a bitter result for Los Blancos even without the alarming sight of Kylian Mbappé hobbling off the pitch with an injury.

The French forward lasted 81 minutes before signaling to the dugout that he could not continue. His departure triggered a collapse that culminated in a 94th-minute leveler from Betis right back Héctor Bellerín.

"He was experiencing some discomfort and we'll need to monitor how things progress," manager Álvaro Arbeloa said following the final whistle.

With just under seven weeks remaining before the World Cup kicks off, there are understandable concerns about how this setback could affect the Frenchman's tournament preparations, while Madrid supporters are also casting a nervous eye toward next month's Clásico against Barcelona.

What Injury Does Mbappé Have?

Madrid have yet to officially confirm the nature of Mbappé's injury, though the findings of their initial pitchside assessment have already surfaced in numerous reports.

Early indications suggest Mbappé has sustained a left hamstring strain, though additional tests will be required to establish the true extent of his latest setback.

Supporters will take some comfort in the fact that Mbappé's problem does not appear to involve his troublesome knee, which has already sidelined him on at least three separate occasions this season.

When Could Mbappé Return From Injury?

Without an official diagnosis, pinpointing exactly when Mbappé will be available for selection remains impossible.

Encouragingly, if the preliminary assessment proves accurate and Mbappé has suffered only a minor sprain, his time on the sidelines may be relatively brief. A recovery of a few weeks is possible, though that could still pose a significant issue for Madrid given that El Clásico is currently penciled in for May 10.

To be in contention for the most high-profile fixture of the La Liga calendar, Mbappé would need to recover within two weeks at the absolute maximum—achievable if the final diagnosis confirms only a minor strain.

A more serious injury, such as a tear, would put Mbappé's World Cup ambitions in jeopardy. Barcelona's Lamine Yamal recently had his club season cut short by a hamstring tear, though it is not thought to be severe enough to rule him out of joining Spain's squad in North America. Chelsea and Brazil forward Estêvão, however, is not expected to be as fortunate.
