Meltdowns, Breakdowns, and Fallouts: The Most Explosive Pep Guardiola Moments Revealed in Man City's Gripping New Documentary

A heated confrontation between Pep Guardiola and Kyle Walker that likely hastened the defender's exit from Manchester City in the middle of the 2024–25 season is among several compelling moments featured in A Beautiful Obsession.

The new four-part documentary series from Amazon Prime Video chronicles Guardiola's final two seasons at the club before his departure this summer.

In 2024–25, fresh off making English football history as the first side to claim four successive league titles, City plunged into turmoil. Guardiola's squad went without a victory in seven consecutive matches across all competitions between October and December, suffering six defeats in that run.

In total, that barren spell stretched to just one win in 13 games by the close of 2024.

Kyle Walker, Nathan Ake

The Walker flashpoint erupted following a 2–0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Dec. 1, 2024. The result carried extra weight given that Arne Slot's side already sat atop the Premier League table at that point and ultimately romped to the title by a wide margin.

Guardiola singled out Rúben Dias and Walker as being responsible for Liverpool's decisive second goal, which triggered an explosive reaction from Walker, who claimed the manager had never even wanted him as captain—a role that had traditionally been decided by a squad vote at City.

"You keep saying my name in every meeting and every f---ing thing. Every f---ing meeting, it's my name," Walker fired back after losing his temper.

When Guardiola pressed Walker on his involvement, the player shot back: "You didn't want me to be a captain. I've reacted to someone else, I lost the ball, you somehow bring my name into it."

A visibly shaken Guardiola then responded: "If you've taken it personally, Kyle, I'm sorry. This is my defeat—if I am a problem you have to tell me. I won't stay here for the money or just to stay, I don't want to feel that I have to run away from you.

"If I am a problem, tell me. That is not going to change the love I have for you, not one second."

Walker made just three more starts before departing on loan to AC Milan before the January transfer window closed. His permanent move followed that summer, when he signed for Burnley. Months later, Guardiola addressed the remaining City squad. "You cannot behave as a captain the way he has done it. You cannot [do that] in the toughest moments in our lives."

Even so, the manager admitted he was "incredibly sad" to see Walker leave.

Impact of Guardiola's Divorce Laid Bare

Pep Guardiola

It was shortly after the Liverpool loss and his emotional reaction to being challenged that Guardiola revealed to his squad that he was going through a divorce, ending a 10-year marriage—he had first met his wife Cristina Serra as far back as 1989.

According to long-serving assistant Manuel Estiarte in episode two, City's players "were worried because Pep was nervous, sad, different and only I knew the reason." Estiarte felt he had no choice but to tell the squad they were "seeing a human being" and explained why.

Guardiola addressed the situation himself following a Champions League defeat to Juventus on Dec. 11, 2024, describing it as a "confession."

He told his players: "I am f---ing divorced from the most beautiful woman in your planet, my wife, my ex-wife. I love her unbelievably but we lost the passion. I love her? Yeah, absolutely. She loves me? Yeah, but we lost the passion.

"How do you play football? Because you play, or for something inside? In your lives, whatever you are going to do, do it with passion. I don't want good players, I want players with passion."

Guardiola wasn't the only one showing emotion on screen. Kevin De Bruyne broke down in tears after the club informed him his contract would not be extended. "It's really hard," the Belgian admitted after spending a decade in Manchester.

"My kids don't want to go. It's been really stressful days, and I'm not making decisions any more based on myself. It's easy to go to another team and play football. But it's been a tough time for us as a family."

Unsurprisingly, Guardiola was deeply affected too. "It kills me," he said. City chief executive Ferran Soriano was more measured, noting that De Bruyne "understood the message but was sad about it."
