Goals are pouring into Major League Soccer at an unprecedented rate. The league has shattered its single-season goals record—and stars like Lionel Messi, Son Heung-min and Antoine Griezmann show no signs of slowing down.
As the regular season winds down, 14 fixtures across both the Eastern and Western Conference took place on Wednesday evening. It was a goal-fest, with the league's marquee names and exciting young talents all finding the net, a recurring theme in what has been a historic campaign.
Lucas Halter was among the many players to score, propelling the Houston Dynamo to a 1–0 victory over the Seattle Sounders. His strike not only earned his team all three points, but also helped MLS reach a remarkable milestone.
Halter's goal was the 1,553rd of the 2026 season, eclipsing MLS's previous single-season record of 1,552 set during the 2024 campaign. With two matchdays still remaining, the total tally will only continue to climb.
Lionel Messi Leads the MLS Golden Boot Race

Breaking a new goals record wouldn't be possible without the league's elite forwards delivering clinical performances in the attacking third—and no player is more clinical than Messi.
The Inter Miami skipper has netted 25 times in 29 league outings this season, placing him firmly at the top of the Golden Boot standings. Messi claimed the award last season with 29 goals and will be eager to retain his title.
Only FC Dallas' Petar Musa poses a genuine threat to the eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient. The Croatian striker, who has tallied 22 goals, is the only other player in the league to surpass the 20-goal threshold this season.
Messi's three-goal cushion could evaporate if he draws a blank in Inter Miami's final two fixtures against the New England Revolution and Charlotte FC. However, if he manages to get on the scoresheet, the Golden Boot is virtually his.

Teams With the Most Goals Scored in MLS This Season

Setting a single-season goals record requires contributions well beyond just the league's leading scorers. Consider Inter Miami: they have netted a remarkable 75 goals this season, with only 25 of those coming from Messi.
It comes as little surprise that the Herons sit atop the scoring charts. Luis Suárez has enjoyed a tremendous bounce-back campaign, contributing 16 goals. New addition Germán Berterame has also made his mark with nine goals. In total, the reigning MLS Cup champions have seen 15 different players find the net in 2026.
Five other clubs, including last season's MLS Cup finalists the Vancouver Whitecaps, have surpassed the 60-goal mark. Nineteen teams in total have managed 50 goals or more.
