Michael Carrick Drops Bombshell, Sidelines Bruno Fernandes in Brutal 'Pure Football' Verdict

Having been on the receiving end of Bruno Fernandes's sharp criticism earlier in the week, Michael Carrick delivered a measured dig of his own at Manchester United's skipper.

When asked to explain why the Portuguese midfielder had been left out of Sunday's Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, Carrick brushed aside any notion that the decision stemmed from Fernandes's public attack on his tactical approach. He insisted it was purely a "football decision."

The fact that Fernandes was even included in the squad at all raised eyebrows, given that he had openly criticized Carrick's game plan following Wednesday's Champions League defeat to Como.

"It's a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little bit of space in behind," the midfielder scoffed. "I think sometimes we have to be more brave under pressure and trying to take a risk of getting that press very high and making them uncomfortable."

Carrick brushed off Fernandes's remarks when confronted with them on the banks of Lake Como and declined to rule out removing him as captain. "I'll always do what's best for the football club," he warned.

Yet, for all his outspoken rhetoric, Fernandes's own performances have done little to undermine the case for leaving him on the bench.

Bruno Fernandes's Dire Run of Form

It has been a dramatic fall from grace for the reigning Premier League Player of the Season. After producing the most creatively dominant campaign in the competition's history — breaking the single-season assist record of 20 shared by the legendary duo of Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne — Fernandes has managed just one goal contribution for his teammates so far this term.

This cannot simply be attributed to poor finishing from his colleagues. Fernandes has seen his chance creation drop from four per game to 2.3. His expected assists (xA) figures have followed a comparable downward trend, and the quality of the limited opportunities he has managed to generate has also deteriorated sharply.

During the 2025–26 Premier League season, Fernandes created one Opta-defined 'big chance' every 93 minutes on the pitch. The 32-year-old has produced just one 'big chance' across the first 10 and a half hours of top-flight action he has accumulated this campaign.

Fernandes has also been far from prolific in front of goal, finding the net in just two Manchester United matches this season — bagging a hat-trick against newly promoted Ipswich Town and adding the second in a 4–0 thrashing of Azerbaijani outfit Sabah FK.

However, the most concerning aspect of Fernandes's recent displays has been his work without the ball. While he made clear that United were instructed not to press Como, the captain still chased around aimlessly up front, burning energy without ever genuinely threatening to win possession. "We actually half pressed man-to-man in the second half and ended up conceding a goal from that," Carrick noted.

As Ralf Rangnick, one of Carrick's predecessors in the Old Trafford dugout, pointed out, you cannot press half-heartedly: "A little bit of pressing is like a little bit of pregnant."
