Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has taken his doping ban appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Mudryk has been absent from Chelsea's lineup since November 2024, when a prolonged mysterious absence was ultimately revealed to stem from a failed drugs test. The Ukrainian international, who maintains he had no intention of cheating, has remained under provisional suspension throughout.
Details surrounding Mudryk's situation have been scarce in the months since, though it came to light in early April that Chelsea had filed an "updated contract" for the 25-year-old, the details of which remain undisclosed.
What Are the Accusations Against Mudryk?
A routine anti-doping test conducted on Mudryk in late 2024 detected meldonium, a prohibited substance, in his system.
Mudryk publicly acknowledged in December of that year that he had returned a positive test for the substance, but strongly insisted it was not deliberate. He pledged to contest the charges, and Chelsea publicly backed their winger, whose transfer to Stamford Bridge in January 2023 was structured in a deal worth up to $108 million (£88.5 million) with all bonuses included.
"We have €30 million of bonuses in his contract," Sergei Palkin, director of Mudryk's former club Shakhtar Donetsk, told Ben Jacobs. "If he's not playing, or Chelsea aren't reaching results, we are losing €30 million. That's a big financial impact for us."
Mudryk Doping Ban: Latest Updates
If found guilty, Mudryk was facing a potential ban of as long as four years. According to Jacobs, the English Football Association have opted for the maximum penalty.
Four-year bans are fairly common following a failed doping test. French midfielder Paul Pogba was handed the same punishment in February 2024 but pursued an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), arguing he had no knowledge of ingesting a banned substance. Pogba's appeal was successful, with his ban cut down to 18 months.
Mudryk is seeking to follow a similar route, and CAS has now confirmed receiving an appeal from the winger that was submitted back in February.
"CAS confirms it has received an appeal by Mykhailo Mudryk against the FA, filed on 25 February 2026," a statement read.
"The Parties are currently exchanging written submissions, and a hearing is yet to be scheduled."
Should Mudryk successfully demonstrate that his failed test was unintentional, his ban will likely be shortened. Any resulting suspension is expected to account for the 16 months he has already served, meaning a reduction to around the 18-month mark would almost certainly allow him to return to action immediately given the current timeline.
Will Mudryk Play for Chelsea Again?
Chelsea have stood by Mudryk throughout the proceedings but will now wait for the outcome of the CAS appeal before determining their next steps with the high-priced Ukrainian winger.
In Pogba's situation, a four-year ban handed down in February 2024 was overturned in early October of the same year. Chelsea will be hoping for a comparable turnaround.
Mudryk remains contracted to Chelsea until 2031, meaning he would still be able to represent the Blues even if forced to serve a full four-year ban—factoring in his current suspension, the earliest he could return under that scenario would be December 2028.
The more pressing question, however, is whether Mudryk has any long-term future at Chelsea regardless of the ban's outcome.
The Blues have strengthened their wide positions during Mudryk's absence, signing Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens last summer as a clear indication they have been planning for life without a player who, even prior to his ban, contributed very little on the field.
Across 73 appearances in all competitions, Mudryk has recorded just 10 goals and 11 assists for Chelsea, falling considerably short of what is expected from a player commanding such a hefty fee. Once he is eventually cleared to play, a loan departure from Stamford Bridge seems the most probable outcome, with sister club Strasbourg frequently mentioned as a likely destination.
