Nashville SC Clinch MLS Supporters' Shield and Hunt Down Inter Miami's Historic Record

The Supporters' Shield race in Major League Soccer in 2026 was never really in doubt: Nashville SC looked destined to claim the honor from the start, given the Tennessee club's commanding presence throughout the campaign.

On Saturday, the Coyotes sealed the shield in memorable style with a 2-0 victory against CF Montréal, relying on strikes from Sam Surridge and Hany Mukhtar to push their tally to 70 points through 31 regular-season matches.

With the victory and the title secured, Nashville wraps up the shield with three matches still remaining in the regular season, allowing the club to rest key players as they gear up for what they hope will be a deep run in the 2026 MLS Cup playoffs.

Beyond this achievement, another milestone is within Nashville's grasp—Inter Miami's all-time regular-season points record. Nashville are averaging 2.26 points per game and are on track to surpass Miami's 2024 campaign of 74 points and 2.18 points per game.  They could potentially finish with as many as 79 points overall.

Should they break the single-season points record, it would be the third time in six years that a club has accomplished the feat, with Miami's 2024 campaign having already eclipsed the 2021 New England Revolution's benchmark.

Nashville Adds to Trophy Collection

Nashville SC's ascent under former U.S. men's national team interim head coach B.J. Callaghan has been rapid. Last season, they became the first professional club in Tennessee history to claim silverware by winning the U.S. Open Cup, powered by leading scorers Mukhtar and Surridge.

This season, after acquiring Cristian Espinoza from the San Jose Earthquakes during the offseason and benefiting from stronger showings from Brian Schwake in goal, the club has made enormous strides—including earning Schwake his first USMNT call-up during the recent September-October international break.

Now that the Supporters' Shield is theirs, alongside last year's U.S. Open Cup triumph, Nashville can set their sights on the ultimate prize in domestic soccer—MLS Cup later this fall—where they will enjoy home-field advantage throughout as the top-ranked side.

The result also secured Nashville a place in the Concacaf Champions Cup next season, making them the second MLS club to qualify in this manner after St. Louis CITY SC did so via a U.S. Open Cup victory. CF Montréal were denied a berth following a shock Canadian Championship defeat to CPL outfit Forge FC.

Can Nashville do the Double?

Toronto FC lifts MLS Cup

Nashville's supremacy will now face its sternest test in the MLS Cup playoffs. While Callaghan's side has coasted through much of the season, the unpredictable and high-stakes nature of the postseason could prove far more challenging than their regular-season form suggests.

No MLS club has claimed both the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup since Toronto FC achieved the treble in 2017, when they also lifted the Canadian Championship's Voyageurs' Cup. While the Tennessee side won't be chasing a treble, completing a double would be a landmark achievement and would arrive just one year after their U.S. Open Cup success.

The MLS Cup playoffs kick off on Nov. 18 with the Wild Card fixtures, which will determine Nashville's opponent in the first-round best-of-three series, building toward MLS Cup on Dec. 15, hosted by the highest-remaining seed in the Supporters' Shield standings.
