Few shirts in global football carry the significance of the Brazil national team jersey, a burden and an honor that 26 players will shoulder at the 2026 World Cup.
The Seleção arrive at the tournament chasing the triumphs of their storied past. Brazil holds the record for the most World Cup championships with five, yet they haven't claimed the title since 2002. Recent disappointments have cast a shadow over an otherwise legendary World Cup history, but Carlo Ancelotti and his squad are intent on reclaiming pride and supremacy for the national side.
The Italian manager raised eyebrows with his official roster for this summer's tournament, handing Brazil's all-time top scorer Neymar his first call-up since October 2023, while omitting Chelsea forward João Pedro.
Official announcements followed, including the reveal of squad numbers for the biggest World Cup in history—with all eyes on who would wear the legendary No. 10.

Neymar Gets the No. 10 Back

There was considerable debate ahead of the tournament over who would claim Brazil's iconic No. 10 shirt, previously worn by icons such as Pelé, Zico, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaká. Neymar joined that elite group, cementing his place on the list as he piled up goals for the Seleção.
However, after suffering an ACL tear in October 2023, the shirt was rotated among the Brazil squad. Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Raphinha each had stints wearing the jersey, with the former sporting it during the March international window.
With Neymar back in the fold, the No. 10 was rightfully returned to the Barcelona legend. Even before the numbers were officially announced, Vinicius Jr declared, "The No. 10 belongs to Neymar, that's obvious."
Now, Neymar has the opportunity to etch his name further into World Cup history this summer. Provided he recovers from his injury in time and appears at least once on North American soil, he will become the first player ever to wear Brazil's iconic No. 10 at four separate World Cups.

Matheus Cunha Makes Gesture of Respect to Vinicius Jr

While Vinicius Jr wore the No. 10 during the March international window, Matheus Cunha took on the No. 7. The Manchester United striker could have kept the number, but instead chose to hand it back to its natural owner.
Vinicius Jr wears No. 7 at Real Madrid and has previously carried that number for Brazil as well. It stands to reason it would be his preferred choice now that Neymar has reclaimed the No. 10.
Cunha will instead wear the No. 9 shirt this summer. The 27-year-old carries the No. 10 at United, but he is another player who would never consider taking it away from Neymar.
