Neymar's Injury Crisis: Every Brazil Match Their Star Player Could Miss at the 2026 World Cup

Neymar's Injury Crisis: Every Brazil Match Their Star Player Could Miss at the 2026 World Cup

Neymar Jr. is set to miss two to three weeks of action due to a calf injury, putting his participation in Brazil's early 2026 World Cup fixtures in serious doubt.

Having not represented Brazil for over two years, Neymar's selection in Carlo Ancelotti's 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup sparked widespread celebrations throughout the nation.

However, the excitement quickly gave way to worry after Neymar picked up a calf problem during his final outing for Santos before joining Brazil's training camp. The star attempted to play down the issue, and it was initially deemed minor — until further examinations by the Seleção's medical team revealed the injury was more serious than first thought.

With a recovery window now established, the iconic striker is in a race against time to regain fitness ahead of what would be his fourth World Cup appearance.

Brazil's 2026 World Cup Fixtures Neymar Is Likely to Miss

Morocco national team.

Brazil's team physician Rodrigo Lasmar issued a statement on Thursday outlining the nature of Neymar's injury and the expected recovery period.

The 34-year-old forward will be absent for Brazil's pre-tournament friendlies against Panama on May 31 and Egypt on June 6, losing valuable opportunities to make an impression on Ancelotti ahead of the summer tournament.

Under the most optimistic scenario, Neymar could return to the pitch in two weeks on June 11 — just two days before Brazil's World Cup opener against Morocco. However, the general expectation is that he won't be ready in time and will therefore sit out the first group stage clash against the 2022 semifinalists.

Brazil's second group stage fixture against Haiti on June 19 appears to be a more realistic target for Neymar's return, falling one day after the three-week recovery mark. Should he still not be fit by then, his next possible appearance would be against Scotland on June 24, roughly four weeks away.

Who Could Step Up in Neymar's Absence for Brazil?

Brazil

Fortunately for both Brazil and Ancelotti, managing without Neymar is familiar territory — the forward has yet to feature under the Italian coach, and has made just four international appearances since the conclusion of the 2022 World Cup.

Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad is stacked with attacking talent. The likes of Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Matheus Cunha, Gabriel Martinelli, Endrick, Igor Thiago, and Rayan give the Seleção more than enough options to cope with Neymar's absence.

That said, if Neymar's rehabilitation stalls or he suffers a further setback, Ancelotti may face an even tougher call. Squad replacements due to injury are permitted, but must be confirmed at least 24 hours before the tournament kicks off.

In the worst-case scenario, Ancelotti could be compelled to remove Neymar from the squad entirely, with Chelsea's João Pedro — the most notable absentee from the original selection — emerging as the most probable replacement.

Nevertheless, the hope remains that Neymar recovers within the projected timeframe and can play a meaningful role in Brazil's pursuit of a sixth World Cup title in what is expected to be the final tournament of his illustrious career.
