Neymar's Injury Nightmare Threatens to Derail Brazil's 2026 World Cup Dreams

Neymar Jr.'s confident dismissal of fitness worries ahead of the World Cup has been called into question after he failed to appear at Brazil's opening training camp.

As recently as Tuesday, the experienced forward made every effort to silence concerns over a muscular complaint that has kept him out of Santos' last three matches. While watching his club defeat Deportivo Cuenca in the Copa Sudamericana on Tuesday evening, Neymar was pressed about his physical condition. "What problem?" he shot back.

The issue in question is a swollen calf. Although Santos were eager to play it down as "minor," it proved significant enough to keep Neymar away from Brazil's training session in Teresópolis in Rio de Janeiro.

Neymar was caught on camera stepping off a helicopter at the Granja Comary soccer complex but never made it to the training pitch on Wednesday. The Brazilian soccer federation (CBF) issued a short statement reading: "The player was taken to a clinic in the city for further tests."

This health scare comes just 17 days before Brazil's World Cup opener against Morocco on June 13 at MetLife Stadium, raising serious doubts about his availability. There are also two pre-tournament friendlies against Panama and Egypt for the Seleção to get through. However, even if Neymar were in full health, his place in the starting lineup remains far from certain.

'He Understands'—Will Neymar Start for Brazil at 2026 World Cup?

Neymar Jr

Carlo Ancelotti's squad announcement was overshadowed by debate surrounding Neymar's selection. The Italian reluctantly addressed the matter by naming the injury-prone 34-year-old, yet that only sparked an even more contentious question: Will Neymar feature in Brazil's starting eleven?

Ancelotti declined to be pinned down on the subject when his 26-man squad was revealed. "He might play; he might not; he might come off the bench," the former Real Madrid manager remarked.

CBF executive coordinator Rodrigo Caetano elaborated on Neymar's standing as simply another squad member. "Neymar was very receptive, which doesn't surprise me at all. I think it was extremely positive; the message the manager received was equally positive," he told ge.

"That Neymar understands that, if called up, he would be just one of those 26 players and that he would do everything to earn his minutes, to earn his chance, to earn his spot in the team. As befits a top-level athlete, as is the case with him."

"I think that ambition he had of reaching a World Cup—his fourth World Cup—and being among the record holders across multiple categories," Caetano continued. "I think it's a meaningful realization at this stage of his maturity, at the age he's at, to say: 'I'm privileged, and I'm going to embrace this.'"

Neymar has not started an international match since October 2023, when he suffered a torn ACL against Uruguay. Since the 2022 World Cup, Brazil's all-time leading scorer has accumulated just four caps.

Despite his sparse involvement at club and international level, belief in Neymar within the Brazil camp remains strong. "It goes without saying that Neymar has earned his spot," Caetano added. "Once the technical staff and the manager assessed his progress, both physically and technically, along with the number of games he had played, a conversation with him became necessary.

"We gave him no guarantees of a call-up, because we haven't done that and wouldn't do it with anyone else, but we discussed the possibility of bringing him into the World Cup squad and the reasons that led the technical committee to consider it."
