Phil Parkinson Boldly Forecasts Wrexham's Bright Future After Heartbreaking Final Day Collapse

Phil Parkinson believes Wrexham will return "even stronger" next campaign after the club narrowly missed out on an EFL Championship playoff spot.

The Red Dragons were held to a 2–2 stalemate by Middlesbrough on the final day of the regular season, finishing two points adrift of sixth place. Wrexham knew heading into the last match that their playoff fate was out of their hands, and they ultimately fell short as Hull City mounted a comeback to beat Norwich City.

Wrexham wrapped up the season in seventh place in the Championship — the finest finish in the club's 162-year history. It also meant Parkinson's men were the top-placed newly promoted side and the leading Welsh club, with plenty to celebrate in their first season back in the second tier in 43 years.

Wrexham got off to a sluggish start in the Championship, suffering four losses in their first six games, but gradually found their rhythm as the season progressed.

Following their first home victory of the campaign, the Red Dragons went on a superb nine-game unbeaten run that propelled them up the standings. They kicked off the New Year with four consecutive wins and managed to limit costly dropped points during the promotion run-in.

Wrexham came agonizingly close on the final day, but manager Parkinson expressed pride in his squad's efforts despite the difficult opening stretch. "We brought so many new players into the club. We had a lot of players who have come up quickly through the divisions with us, and that was a challenge," he admitted.

"It took us a while to get going. We got a couple of uncharacteristic injuries at the start of the season. Slowly but surely, everybody got to know each other. We got to know the players, they got to know the staff, and we formulated another really good dressing room.

"We were so close to achieving it, but it wasn't to be. The lads can be very proud of their achievements, and the supporters can be as well. They have supported us in great numbers, home and away, and shown incredible passion and loyalty for their team."

Playoff hopes appeared all but extinguished when Wrexham suffered a 2–0 defeat to Birmingham on April 12, leaving them four points off sixth place. Yet they bounced back impressively with victories over Stoke City and Oxford United to reignite their unlikely push for the top six.

Parkinson feels the final month of the campaign was a major highlight and will serve as the springboard for an even stronger second season in the Championship.

He added, "After the Birmingham defeat, the season could have petered out—it really could. As you get to this stage of the season, there are a lot of players carrying injuries, a lot of tired legs out there. But we responded again with the Stoke and the Oxford victories. It just wasn't to be.

"In terms of what the lads have given us as a group, I don't think we could have had much more. I think this squad, together, as it stands, with a preseason together, will be even stronger next year.

"Of course, we'll always look to try to add to that to give ourselves an even better chance, but we'll have a break now, and we'll come back and go again."
