Phil Parkinson Breaks Silence on Wrexham's Transfer Plans as Window Swings Open

Phil Parkinson Breaks Silence on Wrexham's Transfer Plans as Window Swings Open

Phil Parkinson has cautioned that it could be a while before Wrexham complete their first transfer of the 2026 summer window.

The Red Dragons fell just short of a Championship playoff spot last season and are looking to bolster their squad over the summer. Wrexham brought in 13 players ahead of their first campaign back in the second tier in 43 years, but this time around they are expected to focus on quality rather than volume.

Wrexham are looking to upgrade their wing back positions this summer and are also anticipated to pursue a holding midfielder and a center forward. The Welsh side may also seek an additional goalkeeper, with neither Arthur Okonkwo nor Danny Ward having established themselves as a clear first choice at this level.

Despite finishing only two points outside the playoff places, sources close to the club anticipate the Championship will be even more fiercely contested next season. The three clubs dropping down from the Premier League will benefit from substantial parachute payments intended to cushion their transition to the second division, potentially elevating the overall quality of the league.

Wrexham Set for Slow Start to Summer Transfer Window

Wrexham have typically preferred to carry out the majority of their transfer activity later in the summer window, once there is a better understanding of player availability. That strategy is set to continue this year, with a number of targets participating in the 2026 World Cup, along with their agents and representatives.

The summer transfer window officially opened on Monday, June 15, but Parkinson is not expecting any immediate new faces at the Racecourse Ground. Wrexham take on Wisła Kraków in their opening preseason fixture in under a month, on Saturday, July 11.

"The World Cup always has a slowing effect on parts of the market, and we expect that to be the case once more," the Wrexham boss told The Leader. "I'm not expecting a great deal of activity over the coming weeks.

"There was significant change last year. Some players arrived early, such as Danny Ward and Ryan Hardie, while others came in later. We have a clear picture of the areas we want to improve and, as ever, we're working hard behind the scenes to make it happen.

"But sometimes the work at this point in the summer goes largely under the radar because it involves conversations with agents and players and ensuring we remain informed about the individuals we're looking to bring to the club."
