Phil Parkinson Cracks the Code to Rescue Wrexham From Injury Crisis

WREXHAM, Wales — Phil Parkinson delivered a shrewd tactical display as Wrexham dismantled Preston North End 4–1 in the EFL Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Dragons had squandered a one-goal advantage to fall to West Bromwich Albion in midweek but responded emphatically with a dominant victory over the league's basement side. Though it was not a flawless showing, Wrexham were markedly better than they had been on Tuesday night and could have won by an even greater margin had they converted more of their opportunities.

Parkinson was eager to highlight that Wrexham claimed their impressive win despite a lengthy injury list that currently has seven first-team players on the sidelines. He made four changes from the side that fell to West Brom and also introduced an uncommon tactical tweak.

For the first time since Wrexham's return to the Championship, Parkinson opted for two strikers from the outset, reverting to the system that helped propel the Red Dragons to promotion during their League One campaign. This saw leading scorer Kieffer Moore partner backup striker Sam Smith up front, a setup that proved highly effective against a Preston side lacking in confidence.

While Wrexham's direct style had done little to unsettle West Brom in midweek, it created significant difficulties for Preston, with all four goals stemming from set-piece situations. Joe Worrall opened his Wrexham account with a looping header from a cross into the area. Ben Whiteman netted his first goal for the club with a deflected long-range effort from a throw-in routine. Smith and Moore also both found the net from set-piece deliveries.

It may not always be the ideal solution, but against physically imposing opponents, Wrexham could benefit from sacrificing bench depth by starting both senior strikers. The approach grew even more attractive after the Red Dragons recorded their largest home winning margin since beating Charlton Athletic to clinch promotion from League One.

"Brilliant. Smudger [Sam Smith], I spoke to him this morning about everything we needed from him," Parkinson said after the match. "I thought he delivered exactly what we asked; he was a real handful. I love it when opposition defenders come off and say, 'Wow, he is a tough player to face.'

"He is strong when the ball goes long, he works tirelessly in behind, and he gave them no end of trouble today. I am so pleased for Sam. He is one of the lads who has been with us for some time and is a fantastic character. He had a brilliant second half of last season and a really strong preseason. Kieffer's form has been excellent, and Sam hasn't quite had his moment yet, but he has been close. Today he got one, and he will only go from strength to strength."

Parkinson had plenty of praise for Moore as well. "[His] fifth goal in 11 games, nine starts. He is right at the peak of his game. My job is to keep him there, and it is his responsibility too."
