Real Madrid Lock Down Jude Bellingham With Smart Contract, Learning From Vinicius Junior Blunders

Real Madrid and Jude Bellingham have reportedly struck a new agreement that will keep the midfield star at the Bernabéu until 2031.

Bellingham, who arrived in the Spanish capital in June 2023, entered contract discussions at the end of the club's trophy-free 2025–26 season to work out the details of a new deal. Now, just a few months on, both parties have already come to terms.

AS report that Real Madrid agreed to extend Bellingham's time in the famous white kit by two additional seasons, pushing back his original 2029 expiry date. The revised deal comes with enhanced terms that likely includes a pay rise to reflect his "standing" both on the field and within the squad.

At just 23 years of age, Bellingham has established himself as a composed and natural leader for Los Blancos. The England international absorbed lessons from his time alongside Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić about what it takes to succeed at the Bernabéu, and has since followed in the footsteps of those two club legends. Even during a difficult spell last season, he continued to display a level of effort and determination that many of his more experienced teammates failed to match.

Bellingham's impact on the pitch has been undeniable. He carried Real Madrid to the 2023–24 La Liga title in his debut season and played a pivotal role in the club's Champions League victory that same year. The midfielder consistently delivers in high-pressure moments with crucial goals, regardless of where he is deployed on the pitch.

A contract extension for Bellingham comes as little surprise, though the swift negotiating process stands in stark contrast to the lengthy ordeal surrounding Vinícius Júnior's renewal.

Real Madrid Learned From Vinicius Junior Saga

Vinícius Júnior

Real Madrid had previously found themselves in a prolonged standoff with Vinícius Jr that lasted 19 months. The winger's contract was due to run out at the end of the season, but the two sides were unable to find common ground on the financial terms.

Vinícius Jr was reportedly seeking a salary of €30 million ($33.7 million) per year, a figure Los Blancos were unwilling to meet given the knock-on effects it would have on the club's wage structure. However, the Brazilian stood firm on his demands, prolonging a contract saga that reached its peak this summer.

When the club refused to meet his requests, Vinícius Jr entertained interest from Premier League champions Arsenal, which pushed Real Madrid back to the negotiating table with a more competitive offer to retain him at the Bernabéu.

Ultimately, Vinícius Jr persuaded the 15-time European champions to hand him a substantial six-year extension with a reported salary of around €24 million ($27 million), which was €4 million above what the club had originally been willing to pay.

In contrast, the Bellingham negotiations saw both parties "on the same page from the outset," according to AS, with no behind-the-scenes maneuvering required to reach an agreement. The club moved swiftly to secure the 23-year-old before he could begin exploring other options to leverage a higher salary.

Bellingham Back to His Best for Club and Country

Jude Bellingham

Bellingham once described himself as a "victim" of his own versatility at Real Madrid. The former Borussia Dortmund star was deployed as a false nine, a No. 10, a left midfielder, a central midfielder, and even a makeshift fullback across his first three years with the club.

Previous coaches shuffled Bellingham across the pitch to cover gaps in an injury-hit and stretched squad. José Mourinho, however, is not repeating that approach.

Bellingham has returned to his preferred No. 10 position, where he has registered five goal contributions in 10 appearances so far this season. His three goals already account for a third of his entire tally from the 2025–26 campaign.

Strong showings for England also helped Bellingham rediscover his best form. The midfielder was outstanding for the Three Lions at this summer's World Cup, contributing seven goals and one assist as they finished in third place.

Bellingham also wrapped up the September-October international break with one goal and four assists to his name. He is clearly back to his sharpest, which bodes well for both England and a Real Madrid side hungry to lift a major trophy.
