Manchester United were held to a draw by fierce rivals Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalizing after Bryan Mbeumo had given the visitors the lead.
Michael Carrick came into this match under significant pressure following a dismal performance against Tottenham Hotspur and a subsequent Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid. Lisandro Martínez's post-match remarks effectively confirmed the club's turbulent state, and many had tipped United as underdogs in West Yorkshire, given Leeds' strong start to the campaign.
Daniel Farke's men suffered their first league loss of the season at Arsenal the previous weekend, yet they were made to fight tooth and nail for a share of the spoils against the Red Devils. In a gritty, old-fashioned contest, Man Utd battled hard and fully deserved their first-half advantage.
Nevertheless, Leeds generated sustained pressure that the visitors found difficult to contain, and Calvert-Lewin continues to be a constant threat in front of goal at Elland Road. He leveled from a scrambled corner situation, and while ample time remained, both sides appeared satisfied with splitting the points.
Clear-cut opportunities were scarce in the closing stages, and Carrick's squad will head back to Manchester with a foundation to build upon.
Heroes and Villains
Hero

Give Bryan Mbeumo a central role, and he will get the job done.
The Cameroonian has spent a large portion of the season deployed out wide, tasked with creating space in one-on-one situations while seeing limited involvement inside the penalty area. That simply isn't where he thrives.
He formed a lethal partnership with Ivan Toney at Brentford, the duo particularly dangerous on the break, and while his effectiveness in transition has only occasionally surfaced at Manchester, Mbeumo has demonstrated sharp instincts when operating near goal.
He squandered a golden headed opportunity from a superb Youri Tielemans delivery, but made amends shortly after. Undeterred by the earlier miss, Mbeumo finished with real intelligence from another Tielemans cross, opening his foot to guide the ball past James Trafford and into the corner.
It wasn't a commanding display from Man Utd's scorer, who appeared disoriented during Leeds' equalizing sequence, yet the Cameroonian's strike ultimately secured a valuable result at Elland Road.
Villain

Man Utd were fairly solid as a unit in a hostile atmosphere, with Leeds bearing a resemblance to Chris Wilder's Sheffield United side that lit up the Premier League with their dynamic center backs in 2019–20.
Carrick can therefore take some satisfaction from the point, even with a lead relinquished, but United's resilient showing came in spite of their captain's contribution.
Bruno Fernandes has historically enjoyed matches against Leeds, yet the Portuguese midfielder was at his very worst on Sunday afternoon. He was petulant and confrontational, even berating teammates for making sensible decisions (notably his reaction toward Tielemans after Mbeumo headed his excellent cross wide).
He's playing like someone aware he's in a slump, overreaching in an attempt to rediscover his form. Right now, Fernandes at his peak feels like a distant memory.
Man Utd Player Ratings vs. Leeds (3-4-2-1)

*Ratings provided by FotMob*
GK: Senne Lammens—7.0: There was little he could have done to stop Calvert-Lewin from drawing Leeds level. Despite Leeds enjoying bright periods, they rarely tested Man Utd's goalkeeper.
CB: Leny Yoro—6.9: The young Frenchman continues to grow in confidence, even when asked to adapt to a different role. Yoro handled the demands of playing as a wide center back in Man Utd's back three without difficulty.
CB: Harry Maguire—7.5: Another match without a clean sheet for the visitors, though Maguire dealt effectively with Leeds' threat from wide deliveries.
CB: Lisandro Martínez—6.1: The Argentine kept his place despite his midweek outburst, but featured for only 45 minutes. Martínez was substituted at the break, seemingly due to a physical issue.
RWB: Amad Diallo—7.2: Man Utd's attacking balance is clearly improved when Amad operates on the right flank. The Ivorian wasn't heavily involved at Elland Road, but contributed to the opening goal.
CM: Carlos Baleba—6.8: Baleba is a key presence in Man Utd's midfield, though he still lacks a degree of polish both on and off the ball. His first Premier League start for the club came to an end after 73 minutes.
CM: Andrey Santos—6.7: A display that summed Santos up well. Tidy and composed, but largely unremarkable. Nothing to write home about.
LWB: Diogo Dalot—8.2: Dalot was tasked with providing width and energy down the left flank. Dependable in every phase, contributing drive in transition.
AM: Youri Tielemans—7.7: His weaknesses were well hidden and his qualities put to good use. Tielemans impressed, particularly during Man Utd's dominant first-half spell when he created the opener.
AM: Bruno Fernandes—6.9: Fernandes boasts a strong record in this fixture, but Man Utd's skipper was largely a frustrated presence at Elland Road. He was cautioned in the first half for a reckless challenge.
ST: Bryan Mbeumo—7.1: Man Utd's goalscorer worked tirelessly without the ball and showed his intelligence in and around the opposition's penalty area. His movement caused Leeds' defense problems throughout, especially in the opening half.
SUB: Noussair Mazraoui (46' for Martínez)—7.3: Shook off a shaky beginning and made a couple of vital defensive contributions late in the match.
SUB: Mason Mount (74' for Baleba)—6.9: Struggled to make a clean impact on a couple of occasions.
SUB: Matheus Cunha (84' for Tielemans)—N/A
Subs not used: Karl Darlow (GK), Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Amass, Shea Lacey, Joshua Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford.
