Real Madrid's defensive rebuild under José Mourinho has taken another step forward, with the club officially confirming the signing of Denzel Dumfries.
Madrid had struck a deal with Inter Milan for the Dutch international prior to the World Cup, and the transfer was finalised following the Netherlands' early exit from the tournament in the round of 32.
Ronald Koeman, who has since stepped down as Netherlands head coach, leaned heavily on Dumfries throughout the North American tournament, with the dynamic right back featuring for every minute of the Dutch campaign, which ended in a penalty shootout loss to Morocco.
Dumfries will now take some time to recover before gearing up for a Mourinho preseason in Madrid, as Los Blancos look to wrestle the La Liga title back from Barcelona in the 'Special One's' first campaign back in charge.
Dumfries Not the First Through the Door

Real Madrid's defensive record wasn't particularly concerning last season, but the club has moved on from both Dani Carvajal and David Alaba. Though a markedly different type of right back, Dumfries has been brought in to fill the void left by the long-serving Carvajal and offer genuine competition to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Announcing the completion of Dumfries' transfer, a Madrid statement read: "Real Madrid C.F. and Inter Milan have reached an agreement for the transfer of player Denzel Dumfries, who will be linked to our club for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030."
The Spanish giants are reported to have activated the release clause in the 30-year-old's Inter contract, understood to be valued at €20 million ($22.7 million).
The Dutchman departs Inter after five seasons, having made 207 appearances and contributed to 55 goals. Injury disruptions restricted him to just 20 Serie A appearances last term, as the Nerazzurri won back the Scudetto under Cristian Chivu in his debut season at the helm.

He becomes the fourth addition to Madrid's squad this summer, linking up with Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella and Ibrahima Konaté at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Silva and Konaté both arrived on free transfers, while Cucurella made the move from Chelsea in a deal potentially worth up to €55 million ($69.4 million). The Spaniard is expected to be Mourinho's preferred left back option next season, though Dumfries and Konaté will need to compete for playing time in their respective positions.
Dumfries offers Mourinho a different attacking dimension on the right flank compared to Alexander-Arnold, who tends to function as a deep-lying playmaker when in possession. Dumfries is less polished in build-up play, with previous coaches scaling back his involvement in that phase and instead unleashing him to cause problems in the attacking third.
The 30-year-old poses a significant danger in and around the opposition penalty area, whether attacking or delivering crosses.
