Real Madrid Set to Offload Arsenal's Long-Coveted Transfer Target, Reports Claim

Real Madrid are reportedly preparing to offload highly-rated young defender Víctor Valdepeñas to Fiorentina for approximately €8 million ($9 million).

The 19-year-old progressed through Madrid's youth academy and has made a single senior appearance for the club, coming in the La Liga win against Alavés in December 2025.

Fabrizo Romano reports that Valdepeñas has penned a deal with Fiorentina running until 2031, with Real Madrid retaining "a 50% sell-on clause and future control in case of any bids."

Before his switch to Italy, Valdepeñas had been identified as a transfer target for Premier League champions Arsenal. AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund were also among the clubs linked with the youngster.

As far back as February, Spanish reports indicated that Arsenal had a keen interest in the left-footed defender, who is capable of playing centrally, at left back, or even in a midfield role.

AS described the emerging talent as follows: "His aerial ability (courtesy of his 1.88m height) stands out, and thanks to his imposing physique, he's a good winner of duels, allowing the defense to push high up the pitch, to press as high as possible and pin opponents back. A 19-year-old Swiss Army knife who fits right in at London. And anywhere else."

Madrid Are the Masters at Maximizing Value

Valdepeñas's departure to Fiorentina is the latest in a lengthy series of Real Madrid academy talents being sold while the club retains certain rights. In recent years, Los Blancos have grown increasingly skilled at extracting maximum value from players considered not yet ready, or not quite suited, for the senior squad.

While the precise terms of Valdepeñas's agreement remain undisclosed, sell-on clauses and similar arrangements have been embedded in transfers involving several young players now flourishing across Europe, including Nico Paz, whose rights were sold to Como for €60 million ($68 million) in a complex deal this summer, featuring a buyback clause of €80 million ($91 million).

Also this summer, Madrid are reported to have earned as much as €20 million ($23 million) from Víctor Muñoz's sale from Osasuna to Liverpool, €12.5 million ($14 million) from Álvaro Rodríguez's move from Elche to Bournemouth, €15 million ($17 million) for Mario Gila's transfer to AC Milan, and €3.5 million ($4 million) for Mario Martín's switch to Getafe.

Fran García's recent transfer to Real Betis has generated further revenue as a direct sale.

On the incoming front, Madrid have secured Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konaté on free transfers, while Marc Cucurella and Denzel Dumfries have also arrived from Chelsea and Inter Milan respectively. At least one additional defender and a midfielder are anticipated to join new manager José Mourinho's squad before the transfer window shuts.
