Real Madrid Stun AEK Athens With Yet Another Breathtaking European Comeback!

Real Madrid mounted two separate comebacks to edge past AEK Athens 3–2 on Wednesday evening, with Federico Valverde's breathtaking injury-time thunderbolt sealing the dramatic victory.

The home side were fired up for Real Madrid's arrival and pressed the visitors hard from the off. After squandering two early opportunities, Aboubakary Koïta made a clever run past Marc Cucurella and drilled a near-post effort past Thibaut Courtois, handing AEK Athens the advantage inside just 12 minutes.

Real Madrid weathered the early storm and gradually found their footing. After seeing an equalizer ruled out for a tight offside call, Jude Bellingham restored parity with an exquisite backheel finish just after the half-hour mark. It was the kind of goal only the very elite can produce.

The second half descended into a scrappy affair as both sides struggled to carve out clear-cut chances. Yet just as Los Blancos appeared to be taking control, a lightning-quick counter saw Koïta turn creator, rolling a low cross for Stavros Pilios to slot the hosts back in front in the 75th minute.

The lead lasted only three minutes, however, as a superb Bellingham pass sent Denzel Dumfries through to square for Kylian Mbappé, who shook off what had been a frustrating evening to grab a vital leveler.

The 15-time European champions piled on the pressure in the closing stages and ultimately, Valverde unleashed a characteristic long-range rocket that nestled into the top corner, clinching the win for Jose Mourinho's men with barely seconds to spare.

The classic Champions League fightback keeps Real Madrid's record unblemished in the league phase and stretches their winning run to seven consecutive matches.

Winners and Losers

Winners

Bernardo Silva vs. AEK Athens.

Bernardo Silva could well be considered Real Madrid's standout performer on the night. Entrusted with orchestrating his side's build-up play, the Portuguese maestro was at his imperious best. His astute movement ensured he was always available as an option, and he commanded the ball with authority. Silva made surging runs into the box on occasion—a tactical tweak Mourinho has introduced to his game—while also possessing the energy to drop back and support his defenders. It was a thoroughly complete display.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find new ways to praise Jude Bellingham, a player who consistently rises above his circumstances to deliver. The Englishman's ability to inspire his team through tough moments was once again evident. His equalizer was a moment of pure class, and his incisive pass to set up Madrid's second was equally impressive.

And when Real Madrid needed someone to step up, it was skipper Fede Valverde who answered the call. The Uruguayan sealed the victory with a majestic strike, one of the standout goals of this Champions League campaign.

Losers

Vinícius Júnior against AEK Athens.

It feels repetitive to say it, but it remains staggering just how ineffective Vinícius Júnior looks right now. The Brazilian's ability is undeniable, yet his confidence appears completely shattered. His presence on the pitch immediately unsettles Yan Diomande, who is forced to operate on the right flank. At this moment, Vinícius Jr is actively hindering Real Madrid's attack due to his alarming dip in form and the knock-on effect it has on his teammates.

Not even a goal contribution could salvage another underwhelming outing from Denzel Dumfries. He again drove forward with intent at times, but appears lost when it comes to making decisions in dangerous areas once he receives the ball—unless Mbappé is standing unmarked inside the six-yard box.

Defensively, he was Madrid's most vulnerable player—which is notable given how unconvincing Éder Militão, Antonio Rüdiger and Marc Cucurella also looked.

Real Madrid Player Ratings vs. AEK Athens (4-2-3-1)

Jude Bellingham.

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Thibaut Courtois—6.1: Were it not for Courtois's brilliance, Los Blancos would have shipped at least three goals before the 20-minute mark.

RB: Denzel Dumfries—7.2: A defensive liability from the outset. The Dutchman was repeatedly beaten in one-on-one situations against AEK's attackers and was frequently caught out of position. He contributed an assist but beyond that, even his throw-ins were wayward.

CB: Éder Militão—7.5: This was the Brazilian's first start of the season and it was evident. Militão looked sluggish and ring-rusty, with Luka Jović able to take advantage of his below-par showing.

CB: Antonio Rüdiger—6.9: Militão at least has limited match time as a mitigating factor. Rüdiger, however, was equally troubled by Jović and even more so by Mijat Gaćinović, with the pair using sharp movement to spin him and create shooting opportunities.

LB: Marc Cucurella—8.1: A sloppy moment from Cucurella, who failed to stay close enough to Koïta and was beaten by his feint, gifting him the room to put his side ahead. He made amends by teeing up Bellingham's equalizer, but remained far from convincing and gave away fouls throughout the match.

CM: Bernardo Silva—7.8: With Arda Güler absent, Silva took on the responsibility of structuring Madrid's possession play and delivered a polished performance in his trademark style. He roamed freely across the base of midfield and consistently made the correct choice on the ball.

CM: Eduardo Camavinga—8.1: After a shaky opening, Camavinga found his rhythm and became the anchor of Madrid's midfield. He relentlessly snuffed out threatening AEK attacks, recording 12 defensive actions—more than any other player on the field.

RW: Yan Diomande—7.6: Despite producing a few quality deliveries, the youngster was unable to maintain his recent impressive run of form, appearing uneasy and inconsistent while deployed out wide on the right.

AM: Jude Bellingham—8.6: A man-of-the-match showing from Bellingham. Beyond his stunning goal, he initiated the build-up for Madrid's second and was Los Blancos' most threatening presence. Exceptionally direct in possession, and Mourinho will also appreciate his considerable defensive effort.

LW: Vinícius Júnior—6.8: He truly appears to have lost his spark. Simply unable to get past his marker all evening, contributing almost nothing going forward.

ST: Kylian Mbappé—8.3: As hard as it is to believe, Mbappé was overshadowed by former Real Madrid forward Luka Jović for large stretches of the game. Nevertheless, the Frenchman has an inevitability about him and departed Greece with another goal to his name.

SUB: Fede Valverde (67' for Diomande)—8.0: He only ever scores screamers, and his latest completed Madrid's comeback in the dying moments.

SUB: Endrick (67' for Silva)—6.4: Created two chances during his brief appearance, but also failed to track back defensively in the build-up to AEK's second goal.

SUB: Álvaro Carreras (81' for Cucurella)—N/A

SUB: Brahim Díaz (81' for Vinícius)—N/A

SUB: Carlos Espí (86' for Bellingham)—N/A

Subs not used: Andriy Lunin (GK), Sergio Mestre (GK), Dean Huijsen, Ibrahima Konaté, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Pitarch, Sergio Martínez
