Ibrahima Konaté reportedly failed to reach a contract extension with Liverpool due to disputes over proposed bonus structures.
The French defender, whose deal with the Reds expires on June 30, confirmed his departure as a free agent after Anfield had already said goodbye to Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. The announcement came just 24 hours after Arne Slot's own exit from the club.
Konaté's contract situation dragged on for nearly the entire 2025–26 season, with ongoing negotiations never yielding a clear resolution between the two sides. The center back's financial expectations were believed to be at the heart of the impasse, and new details have surfaced to support that view.
Fabrizio Romano reports that neither the contract length nor the base salary were the sticking points, but rather the bonus clauses. "Extra bonuses" tied to trophy wins and appearance-based incentives, among other milestones, were areas where Konaté and the club ultimately couldn't find common ground, causing what had been a "close" agreement to fall apart.
Without a new deal in place, the center back bid farewell to Anfield — his home for the past five seasons — as he seeks a fresh start elsewhere.
Konaté's Next Destination Could Include a Liverpool Reunion
Whenever a high-profile free agent becomes available, Real Madrid are usually the first club to come calling. The Spanish powerhouse has made a habit in recent years of waiting to land marquee players on free transfers — just look at how they brought in Kylian Mbappé, Antonio Rüdiger, David Alaba, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Konaté looks set to be the next name on that list. Recent reports indicate the defender has reached a verbal agreement with Los Blancos on a four-year deal, though the move is contingent on club president Florentino Pérez's re-election.
Konaté could link up again with Alexander-Arnold at the Bernabéu, looking to recapture the chemistry that helped the pair claim five trophies together, including the 2024–25 Premier League title.
The 27-year-old would also add another French international to Real Madrid's ranks, joining Mbappé, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Ferland Mendy. Despite Los Blancos' recent difficulties, it's easy to see why Konaté would be drawn to a move to the Spanish capital.
Konate's Exit Forces Liverpool's Hand
Losing a center back is the last thing Liverpool needed. Despite his inconsistencies, Konaté — who made 51 appearances in 2025–26 — remained a dependable option at a position where the Reds are already stretched thin.
Currently, Liverpool's center back options consist of the aging Virgil van Dijk, the injury-prone Joe Gomez, and the untested Giovanni Leoni, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury back in September. Jérémy Jacquet is also set to arrive at Anfield this summer, though the 20-year-old may need time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.
It has never been more important for Liverpool to dip into the transfer market to strengthen their defensive line. Several targets have been identified, including Tottenham Hotspur's Mickey van de Ven and Brighton & Hove Albion's Jan Paul van Hecke.
