Rival Club Owner Throws Down the Gauntlet to Wrexham Co-Owner and Hollywood Star Ryan Reynolds

There's a fresh face—and a fellow Canadian—making waves, as she's thrown down a lighthearted gauntlet to Canadian-American Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds.

York City owner Julie-Anne Uggla watched her club end a decade-long absence from the National League on Saturday, securing promotion to League Two next season via a thrilling 1–1 stoppage-time draw against Rochdale.

Reynolds has co-owned Wrexham AFC alongside fellow actor Rob McElhenney since 2021, with the pair playing a central role in the club's remarkable ascent. The Red Dragons have earned promotion in three straight seasons, climbing from the National League in 2022–23 all the way to the Championship this campaign, with hopes of reaching the Premier League still very much alive.

Uggla is looking to mirror the ownership success of her fellow Canadian, with ambitions of securing yet another promotion for City in League Two next year.

"Our goal is to go straight through League Two and achieve back-to-back promotions," she said. "I'm going to give that other Canadian [Ryan Reynolds] a run for his money! There are three Canadians in the EFL right now. There's David Hopkinson, the CEO from Newcastle, there's Ryan Reynolds of Wrexham, and now there's Julie-Anne Uggla."

Wrexham headed into Sunday's clash against champions Coventry City hoping to narrow the battle for the final Championship playoff spot to just two sides; however, the Red Dragons dropped vital points, falling to a 3–1 defeat in the Midlands, keeping the tense three-way race with Hull City and Derby very much alive.

With just one matchday remaining in the second tier, Wrexham are level on 70 points with Hull City but hold a narrow goal difference advantage to cling onto sixth place in the table. Derby sit on 69 points, still firmly in contention in eighth.

The nail-biting finish to the Championship season appears to be weighing heavily on Reynolds, who admitted around this time last season that the club's push for promotion to the Championship had given him "an eight-inch ulcer."

"I have, literally, like an eight-inch ulcer in my stomach right now because it's the end of the season," the Deadpool star told the TIME100 Summit in April 2025. "It all comes down to the next two weeks. They just can't do it easy, like just one year let's do it without having receding hairlines all around. We're all losing it. Stress [is] killing us."

Wrexham find themselves on another nerve-shredding run-in, and Reynolds will need to steel himself for further anxiety. They host a formidable Middlesbrough side on Saturday in what is the toughest remaining fixture among the three playoff-chasing clubs. A victory will be essential to keep their fate in their own hands, and they will secure the final playoff berth as long as they match or better Hull City's result.
