Six Defensive Powerhouses Barcelona Must Target in the January Transfer Window

Barcelona have yet to bring in a center back during the Hansi Flick era, but that could change come January as the Spanish giants are reportedly on the hunt for a left-footed central defender.

Securing a center back capable of partnering Pau Cubarsí had been identified as a priority heading into the 2026 summer transfer window. The defensive unit—and the heart of the backline in particular—has been Barcelona's weak point over the past two campaigns, especially following Iñigo Martínez's departure in the summer of 2025.

However, Flick chose not to pursue defensive reinforcements, with Barça's transfer activity instead focused on strengthening an already potent attack. Now, following a string of defensive injuries and underwhelming displays at the back in high-profile matches, Flick's position appears to have shifted.

According to The Athletic, the Catalans are seeking to bring in a left-footed center back during the January window to partner Cubarsí. Any potential deal hinges on Barcelona moving players out, with Alejandro Balde and Jules Koundé appearing to be the most likely departures.

Shoring up a fragile defense could significantly boost Barcelona's prospects in the Champions League, and here are six left-footed center backs who could make their way to Catalonia when 2027 arrives.

Joško Gvardiol

Had Barcelona moved for a center back last summer, Manchester City's Joško Gvardiol was their primary target, according to The Athletic.

It's easy to see the appeal. The Croatian international possesses the qualities required to thrive at Barcelona under Flick's aggressive high defensive line. He's a versatile operator capable of playing at left back, composed in possession and, crucially, athletic and quick enough to cover ground and defend space.

However, Barcelona's best opportunity to land Gvardiol appears to have passed. The 24-year-old penned a new contract at City over the summer running until 2031. Barring a significant shift stemming from the pending verdict on City's misconduct charges, it would take an enormous financial commitment for Barça to bring him in during January—assuming City would entertain negotiations at all.

Alessandro Bastoni

Alessandro Bastoni.

Aside from Julián Alvarez, no player has been more consistently linked with a move to Barcelona over the past two seasons than Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni.

Ever since that Instagram post in which he went out of his way to heap praise on Lamine Yamal following the unforgettable 2024–25 Champions League semifinal tie, Bastoni has remained firmly on Barcelona's radar.

Reports emerged in the spring suggesting Barcelona had already initiated contact with Bastoni's representatives. Ultimately, per The Athletic, Flick put the brakes on the potential transfer, citing concerns about Bastoni's ability to adapt to his high-risk system, given the defender's prolonged experience in Inter's back-three setup.

There's no questioning Bastoni's quality in possession, and his leadership and physicality are attributes Barça have sorely missed since Martínez's exit. Flick may have reservations, but it's difficult to imagine the Italian not elevating Barcelona's defensive standards.

Bastoni will be entering the final 18 months of his deal when January arrives. Until he puts pen to paper on an extension, he looks set to remain a recurring name in Barcelona transfer speculation.

Lisandro Martínez

Lisandro Martínez.

Lisandro Martínez is enduring a torrid start to the season at Manchester United, and his time at Old Trafford looks increasingly likely to conclude next summer when his contract runs out.

For many, his future was effectively decided when he publicly lashed out at United's sporting directors in a remarkable outburst following the recent loss to Atlético Madrid, though his on-field contributions this season have done little to help the club's cause.

His reputation has taken a hit, but on paper, Martínez has the attributes to benefit Barcelona. He's a dependable passer and ball carrier, a quick defender whose tenacity compensates for his modest stature. At his peak, he's an outstanding defender, as he demonstrated at the 2026 World Cup with Argentina.

According to Sport, Barcelona would consider a move for the Argentine provided it doesn't demand significant outlay. Atlético Madrid also showed mutual interest last summer, meaning the Catalans would face competition should they decide to pursue him.

Castello Lukeba

RB Leipzig center back Castello Lukeba is steadily establishing himself as one of the standout defenders in the Bundesliga, and Barcelona have had their eye on his situation since the summer.

Just months ago, Lukeba was firmly on Barcelona's shortlist as a potential replacement in the event that Alejandro Balde departed. Formal talks between the clubs never materialized, but the Frenchman remains a player the Catalans are keeping tabs on.

Lukeba recently changed agents with ambitions of securing a move to a higher-profile club, and Mundo Deportivo reports that the 23-year-old is open to the idea of joining Barcelona.

Nevertheless, a significant obstacle remains in the shape of an $89.1 million (€80 million) release clause that could put Barça off. That figure drops next summer, which may make Barcelona more inclined to make a move for Lukeba at that point.

Piero Hincapié

Piero Hincapié.

Arsenal possess the most well-stocked center back department in Europe, and Ecuador international Piero Hincapié is struggling to nail down regular minutes after completing a permanent move to the Gunners this summer. Barcelona could look to take advantage.

Reports emerged over the past week indicating that Barcelona sporting director Deco has his sights set on a move for the 24-year-old defender.

Hincapié is contracted to Arsenal until 2031, making any deal far from straightforward. But if his situation fails to improve—he has yet to start a single Premier League fixture this season—the player may be tempted to seek a way out.

His profile aligns with what Barcelona are looking for, even if he isn't the most technically refined of defenders. It may appear to be a long shot, but it's an avenue worth considering—even on a loan basis.

Youri Baas

Youri Baas.

"I think they are the biggest club in the world, it's a huge compliment." Those were the words of Ajax center back Youri Baas when asked about Barcelona's reported interest in him, per Sport.

The 23-year-old Dutchman has recently emerged as a genuine contender to bolster Barcelona's defensive ranks in the January transfer window, continuing the well-established talent corridor between Ajax and Barça.

Baas is a smart, tactically astute defender who reads the game effectively and rarely finds himself out of position. He possesses a technically accomplished left foot, his physique is comparable to Cubarsí's and, like several others on this list, he can operate across multiple positions.

With more than 100 appearances for Ajax under his belt, Baas looks ready to step up to a more demanding stage. Premier League clubs are said to be monitoring him as well, but his recent remarks suggest a move to Catalonia would be his preferred destination.
