Spain Receives Crucial Breakthrough on Lamine Yamal's Recovery and World Cup Fate

Fans gearing up to support Spain at next month's 2026 FIFA World Cup can breathe easy, as all indications suggest Lamine Yamal will be fit to feature.

Just a fortnight after picking up his injury, the 18-year-old Spanish sensation is already in good spirits and back on his feet, training on the grass and putting in work at the gym, according to Fabrizio Romano on Tuesday, who noted he is "expected to be ready for the World Cup."

Yamal also shared an Instagram photo of himself showing off his muscles while riding a stationary bike.

The winger sustained a left hamstring strain on April 22nd after converting a penalty for Barcelona in the club's 1–0 victory over Celta Vigo. He hobbled off the field just before the break and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the club campaign.

Barcelona have coped admirably in the absence of their leading scorer and creator, claiming victories in both matches without him: a 2–0 triumph over Getafe on April 25 and a 2–1 win against Osasuna on Saturday. The Blaugrana can now clinch their back-to-back La Liga crown with just a point in El Clásico on Sunday.

Lamine Yamal's Recovery Timeline vs. Spain's Schedule

There is no confirmed return date for Yamal; however, earlier estimates suggested he would be sidelined for six to eight weeks, placing his potential comeback somewhere between June 3–17.

Spain will play one warm-up match before the World Cup gets underway, taking on Peru at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Mexico on June 8. While that may be too soon for Yamal to be match-fit, he will likely still join Spain's training camp in some capacity.

It is more realistic to expect Yamal to be available during Spain's Group H fixtures, when the European powerhouses open against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on June 15 and June 21 — two ideal low-pressure matches for the youngster's reintroduction. Spain will certainly want Yamal involved in some form for their final group stage clash against Uruguay on June 26.

Spain's head coach Luis de la Fuente has signaled he will manage Yamal's involvement carefully, assessing things match by match and minute by minute, potentially deploying him only when absolutely needed.

"In a call we contemplate all the scenarios," he said Thursday. "If you are winning, if you are losing, if the opponent is left with 10 ... There are players who can give you 20 minutes and that also has enormous value.

"There are players who may not be able to give you 50 or 60 minutes, but they can give you 20 very good ones," he added. "And that can be differential. There are players who can arrive just right and be decisive in the knockout rounds.

"Our priority is to arrive with the best possible team at the decisive moment."
