Struggling Premier League Club Sets Sights on Steven Gerrard as Their Savior

Burnley are reportedly considering bringing in iconic former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard as scrutiny mounts over Scott Parker's position at the club.

The Clarets had their Premier League relegation confirmed last week with four games still remaining in the season. The newly promoted side have managed just one top-flight victory since October, yet the club has stood by Parker, the manager who guided them to a 100-point Championship campaign last season.

That success was underpinned by a historically tight defensive record: Burnley conceded only 16 goals across 46 Championship matches. However, Premier League attackers proved far more difficult to contain. The Clarets needed just nine league outings to ship 17 goals.

Somewhat paradoxically, Parker could arguably be the ideal man to guide Burnley back to the top flight. Despite his shortcomings as a Premier League head coach, the former midfielder has shown mastery of the second tier, earning three promotions with three separate clubs over six years.

Nevertheless, Burnley owner Alan Pace is expected to hold talks with Parker regarding his future and, should a managerial change be required, Gerrard's name is among those being discussed according to The Guardian. Current Wales national team boss Craig Bellamy, who worked as Vincent Kompany's assistant at Turf Moor, is another name in the frame, though it remains uncertain whether he would vacate his current role.

Gerrard, in contrast, is clearly without a club.

Gerrard 'Offered' Rival Championship Club Return

Burnley's future Championship rivals Bristol City have gone even further, reportedly offering Gerrard a permanent role before the current season has even wrapped up, according to The Independent.

When the Robins brought in 78-year-old Roy Hodgson to manage the final seven matches of the season, it was strictly a temporary arrangement. The former England boss has collected six points from his opening six fixtures ahead of the season finale against Stoke City, guiding Bristol City to the safety of mid-table.

Ambitions at the club run high, but former manager Gerhard Struber voiced frustration over the disorganised infrastructure. The Robins are only now closing in on naming a sporting director in James Ellis, whose first priority may be persuading Gerrard to take on the role before launching into a major squad rebuild. As former Robins midfielder Gary Owers warned earlier this campaign: "For City to progress it could be a total rebuild in the summer."

There is evidently less work needed to return Burnley to the Premier League. The Clarets will benefit from substantial parachute payments and already have a number of seasoned Championship performers in their ranks. Bristol City's last top-flight appearance came four weeks before Gerrard was even born.

Should the Champions League winner choose to return to management, he has made it crystal clear that it will only happen on his own terms.

'Unfinished Business'—What Steven Gerrard Has Said About Return to Management

Steven Gerrard fretting.

It has now been 15 months since Gerrard departed Saudi club Al Ettifaq. The former title-winning manager at Rangers spent nine months before making the move to the Middle East following his exit from Aston Villa in October 2022, which remains his sole experience of Premier League management in England. Patience is clearly not a concern for the 45-year-old.

"There's a part of me that still feels that there's a bit of unfinished business in terms of wanting to go in and face another couple of exciting challenges," Gerrard told Rio Ferdinand on his self-titled podcast earlier this season. "But I want a certain type of challenge.

"If in an ideal world they come available, I'll jump at them. If they don't, I won't go back in. I want to be at a team that's going to compete to win because I think that suits me better."

Gerrard backed up his words by reportedly declining the opportunity to return to Rangers last October.

The idea of taking the Liverpool job has also been raised, with Gerrard even expressing openness to serving as an assistant to a top-level manager during a recent appearance on The Overlap. However, with Arne Slot expected to remain at Anfield and not appearing to be in need of a No. 2 who might overshadow him, Gerrard may need to look elsewhere.
