The U.S. men's national team has officially unveiled its 2026 World Cup squad — a 26-player group tasked with delivering the country's finest-ever tournament showing on home soil.

The 26-man squad assembled by head coach Mauricio Pochettino combines seasoned veterans with emerging talent, with half the players set to experience their second World Cup. The selection has not been without its share of controversy, however, as several high-profile absences have raised eyebrows.

Nevertheless, the USMNT and its much-celebrated "golden generation" enter the summer tournament carrying high hopes of making a deep run. In the historic first-ever 48-team World Cup, the co-host nation has several factors working in its favor to justify those ambitions, including passionate home support and a favorable group draw.

With the USMNT's World Cup opener just under three weeks away, the Opta supercomputer has been busy running its projections. Following the Stars and Stripes' roster reveal, here's what Opta forecasts for Pochettino's side at the 2026 World Cup.

Supercomputer Predicts USMNT's World Cup Group Stage Odds

The USMNT sits as the highest-ranked side in Group D. As a host nation, the U.S. was always going to be shielded from the world's elite during the group stage, setting up a relatively manageable opening round.

Pochettino's men will kick off their campaign against Paraguay, before squaring off with Australia and wrapping up the group stage against Türkiye. The world No. 16-ranked USMNT won't encounter another top-20 side in the group stage, with No. 22 Türkiye being the most formidable opponent they'll face.

Given this setup, the USMNT are clear favorites to top Group D, and Opta concurs. The supercomputer assigns the U.S. a 32.83% probability of winning the group, edging out Türkiye's 29.04%.

Opta considers a humiliating group stage exit unlikely for the Stars and Stripes. Thanks to the expanded 48-team format, the top two sides from each group along with the best eight third-place finishers will progress to the knockout stage via the newly introduced round of 32. The supercomputer puts the USMNT's chances of clearing the group stage at 76.94%.

Should the USMNT claim top spot in Group D, they would meet the best third-place finisher from Group B, E, F, I, or J. Regardless of the opponent in the round of 32, Opta gives the Americans a solid shot at progressing, with a 42.9% chance of reaching the last 16.

The challenge intensifies once the round of 16 arrives. The USMNT have reached the quarterfinals just once in their previous six round-of-16 appearances, and the supercomputer puts their odds of repeating that feat at 19.73%. While 15 other teams carry better odds according to Opta, a historic World Cup run will require the U.S. to beat the numbers.

"Why not us?" has become the rallying cry for the USMNT heading into the tournament, and Pochettino has openly dreamed of at least a semifinal appearance — or beyond. Opta, however, gives the U.S. only an 8.08% chance of being among the final four this summer.

The USMNT holds a slim 3.26% probability of reaching a World Cup final for the first time ever, while Opta puts their chances of lifting a first-ever World Cup trophy at just 1.33%.
