Supercomputer Reveals La Liga Title Odds After Real Madrid Stun Barcelona in Thrilling El Clasico Showdown

Nobody saw this one coming. Real Madrid dismantled Barcelona's unbeaten run in stunning style on Sunday evening, completely flipping the early-season narrative on its head.

Heading into Sunday's fixture at Camp Nou, the general consensus was that in-form Barcelona would be too much to handle for a Madrid squad still getting to grips with the beginning of José Mourinho's second spell in charge.

A victory would have made Barcelona the first team in La Liga history—or any of Europe's top five leagues—to begin a season with 10 consecutive wins. Instead, Hansi Flick's men were largely kept quiet by their fierce rivals and suffered their second loss of the week, with Kylian Mbappé netting twice.

It's a result that changes both little and everything at once. Barcelona still lead the table, and Real Madrid sit third, but the perception has shifted. Barça are no longer undefeated, or untouchable. Madrid and Mourinho, on the other hand, have found their spark.

What many had anticipated would be a nine-point gap in the standings by the weekend's close now sits at just three. The title race is well and truly alive.

Here's how Opta's supercomputer revised its La Liga predictions in the wake of the result.

Supercomputer Predicts 2026–27 La Liga Title Winner

Jude Bellingham, Lamine Yamal, Pedri.

Barcelona's statistical likelihood of claiming the La Liga crown remains high at 66.73%, according to Opta's model. That said, it represents a notable decline from before the Clásico began, when the figure sat above 80.

Sunday's winners Real Madrid, by comparison, are now given a 24.2% chance of securing their first La Liga title since 2024.

The third contender in the title picture, Atlético Madrid—who edged past Deportivo 1–0 over the weekend—are assigned just an 8.38% probability of glory, despite currently holding more points than their crosstown rivals.

No other club registers even a full percentage point's worth of hope, with the last team outside Spain's traditional big three to lift the trophy being Valencia all the way back in 2004.

Mourinho, Mbappe Talk Up Title Race

José Mourinho

Reflecting on Sunday's pivotal performance, both Mourinho and Mbappé weighed in on Madrid's revived championship ambitions.

"Real Madrid don't come to Camp Nou just to take three points. Real Madrid come to win La Liga," Mourinho told the press following the emphatic showing. "That has to be the mindset. We must keep this up and not let this victory go to our heads."

Mbappé, for his part, urged his teammates to channel the collective energy that carried them to victory in Catalonia throughout the remainder of the campaign.

The talismanic striker said: "We had tough spells in the game, moments where we took control, and ultimately, winning and staying in the title hunt is huge for us—but we have to keep pushing. We know it's a massive game, but it's still only three points, and we'll need a lot more to win the league.

"We have to keep going because five wins in a row means nothing to us—we want to win every single match. This result at Camp Nou sends a strong message, but we can't act like the season is done. Next week in Santander, we need to bring that same intensity."
